Chapter 3: The Secret Behind My Marriage

The ballroom was no longer a wedding reception.

It was a courtroom.

And I was finally hearing the evidence.

Daniel stood frozen behind me.

His face had lost all color.

“Turn it off,” he said.

My father didn’t move.

“Why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because this isn’t what it looks like.””

I turned slowly.

For the first time in years, I looked at my husband without making excuses for him.

“Then explain.””

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Because some things cannot be explained.

Only revealed.

The recording continued.

The voice on the speakers belonged to Daniel’s business partner, Marcus.

“I don’t understand why you’re waiting,” Marcus said.

Daniel’s recorded voice answered.

“Because if I leave now, everyone will know.””

“Know what?””

A pause.

Then Daniel said the words that shattered whatever was left.

“That I only married her because of the merger.””

My fingers went numb.

The room became blurry.

The merger.

My father’s company.

The company I had never mentioned when I met Daniel.

The company I hid because I wanted someone to love Vivienne, not Jonathan Vale’s daughter.

Daniel had known.

He had known from the beginning.

My father placed a hand on my shoulder.

I barely felt it.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

He stepped toward me.

“Vivienne, listen—”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

It wasn’t angry.

It wasn’t loud.

It was finished.

“No more explaining.””

He stopped.

Three years of memories rushed through my mind.

Our first date.

His promises.

The night he proposed.

The way I believed I had found someone who chose me.

All of it felt different now.

Like a beautiful painting that had been hiding a crack underneath.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“I did love you.””

I looked at him.

“Did you?””

The question hurt him.

Good.

Because I had been hurting alone for a long time.

Eleanor suddenly stepped forward.

“This is unnecessary.””

Everyone looked at her.

She attempted to regain control.

“Vivienne is emotional because she is pregnant.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Careful.””

She ignored him.

“You always wanted to destroy this family.””

I stared at her.

“Destroy your family?””

I touched the torn edge of my dress.

“You destroyed yourself.””

Chloe suddenly laughed.

It was an ugly, desperate sound.

“You think you won?””

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her eyes.

“You’re still the same woman.””

I said nothing.

She stepped closer.

“You think money makes you powerful?””

My father moved forward.

But I stopped him.

“No.””

I looked at Chloe.

“For the first time, I think knowing the truth does.””

Her smile faded.

Then her phone rang.

The sound cut through the silence.

She looked down.

A message appeared.

I saw her expression change.

Fear.

Real fear.

“What is it?”” Eleanor asked.

Chloe didn’t answer.

She typed quickly.

Then another message arrived.

Her hands began shaking.

My father noticed.

“Interesting.””

He walked toward her.

“Who contacted you?””

“Nobody.””

“Give me the phone.””

“No.””

That one word told everyone everything.

My father’s security team moved closer.

Chloe backed away.

“This is private.””

My father looked at the screen from a distance.

Then his face changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He turned toward me.

“Vivienne…”

His voice was quieter now.

And that scared me more than anything else.

“What is it?””

He looked back at Chloe.

“The ring was never the real problem.””

The entire room waited.

My father continued.

“The missing ring was a distraction.””

Eleanor’s face went pale.

Daniel looked confused.

My father’s eyes settled on the three people who had spent years making me feel small.

“They were trying to hide what they stole from you.””

My heartbeat slowed.

“What did they steal?””

Nobody answered.

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

A man walked inside carrying a folder.

He approached my father and whispered something.

My father opened the folder.

He read the first page.

Then he handed it to me.

My hands shook as I looked down.

Because at the top of the document was a name.

Mine.

And underneath it was a signature.

Daniel’s.

With tomorrow’s date.

The date of our divorce filing.

Except there was one detail Daniel never knew.

The document he signed was not a divorce agreement.

It was a confession.

And my father’s next words made the entire ballroom fall silent.

“Vivienne, your husband wasn’t planning to leave you.””

He looked directly at Daniel.

May you like

“He was planning to take everything from you first.””

Would you like Chapter 4 to reveal what Daniel planned to take first, or expose the secret behind the Matriarch Ring?
