Chapter 16: The Person Behind the Camera

I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.

The image was grainy.

Dark.

Taken from the corner of the ballroom.

But there was no mistake.

The person standing near the wall, watching everything unfold, was someone I knew.

Someone who had walked beside my father.

Someone who had opened doors for us.

Someone who had spoken calmly while my world fell apart.

Robert Hale.

My hands went cold.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

My father looked at me.

“Vivienne.””

I lifted the phone.

“Explain.””

Nobody spoke.

Rebecca looked shocked.

Robert was not there.

He had left the house minutes earlier.

And now I understood why.

He wasn’t helping us find the truth.

He was making sure we found only what he wanted us to find.

My father took the phone from me.

His expression darkened.

“This cannot be real.””

I laughed quietly.

“Again?””

He looked at me.

“Again what?””

“Again someone you trusted turns out to be hiding something.””

The words hurt him.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what I meant.

Rebecca stood slowly.

“Robert.””

My father looked at her.

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

But her face said something else.

Not that she knew.

That she suspected.

“Who is he?”” I asked.

Rebecca looked at the floor.

“Your mother’s closest investigator.””

I frowned.

“Then why would he betray her?””

Rebecca’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because your mother trusted the wrong people.””

The sentence felt painfully familiar.

I looked at my father.

At Rebecca.

At the photo.

Everyone had a piece of the truth.

Nobody had all of it.

Then my father’s security officer rushed inside.

“Mr. Vale.””

We turned.

“We found something.””

My father immediately stood.

“Where?””

“In the study.””

We followed him back into the house.

Behind my mother’s old bookshelf was a hidden compartment.

Inside were several files.

A small recording device.

And a handwritten notebook.

My heart raced.

“My mother’s?””

My father nodded.

“Probably.””

I opened the notebook.

The first page contained one sentence.

If you are reading this, it means I failed to stop them.

I felt tears forming.

But I continued.

The pages were filled with names.

Dates.

Meetings.

Evidence.

And one name appeared again and again.

Robert Hale.

I looked up.

My father went still.

“What?””

He took the notebook.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he whispered:

“No.””

Rebecca stepped closer.

“What?””

My father turned the page.

“There’s a payment record.””

“From who?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

I looked.

At the bottom of the page was a transfer.

From a private account.

To Robert Hale.

The date was twenty years ago.

The month my mother died.

My stomach dropped.

“Dad…”

He closed the notebook.

“I didn’t know.””

But this time, the words sounded different.

Not like an excuse.

Like a confession.

A terrible realization.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

“Your mother suspected him.””

I looked at her.

“And you knew?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“She only told me she had a concern.””

“What concern?””

Rebecca looked toward the old window.

“She said Robert knew too much.””

The room went silent.

Then my father’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Jonathan Vale.””

His face changed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then his voice became low.

“Are you sure?””

He ended the call.

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He stared at the floor.

“Robert wasn’t alone tonight.””

“Who was with him?””

My father looked at me.

“The person who gave him access to the wedding security system.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Who?””

My father hesitated.

May you like

Then said:

“Daniel.””
