Chapter 11: The Man My Mother Warned Me About
The room felt like it was spinning.
Daniel.
My husband.
The man I met at a coffee shop.
The man who held my hand during my father’s illness.
The man who promised me I was the only person who ever understood him.
My mother knew him.
Before me.
“How?”” I whispered.
Daniel looked terrified.
“Vivienne, I can explain.””
I turned toward him.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
And that scared him more than anger.
“No more explanations.””
He stopped.
Robert opened the document.
“Your mother hired me to investigate Daniel before your engagement.””
I stared.
“Before our engagement?””
Robert nodded.
“She had concerns.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Robert looked at him.
“Your first meeting with Vivienne was not accidental.””
My heart sank.
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
Then at me.
“Vivienne…”
I felt something inside me crack.
“Was anything real?””
His silence answered.
But then he said something I didn’t expect.
“Yes.””
I stared.
“Yes?””
He stepped closer.
“At first, I was supposed to get close to you.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
“But then what?””
His eyes filled.
“Then I fell in love with you.””
I almost believed him.
That was the cruelest part.
Because love and betrayal had existed together.
I hated that.
I hated that someone could hurt you and still miss you.
“Then why did you continue?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because I was already trapped.””
Eleanor immediately snapped.
“Don’t blame me.””
Everyone looked at her.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You told me I had no choice.””
“You agreed.””
“Yes.””
The word echoed.
A confession.
Daniel looked at me.
“My family was drowning financially.””
Chloe looked uncomfortable.
“Daniel…”
He ignored her.
“My father left debts. Eleanor found a way out.””
His eyes moved toward his mother.
“She promised everything would disappear if I married you.””
I felt sick.
“So I was a solution.””
“At first.””
The honesty destroyed me.
Daniel continued.
“But then you changed everything.””
I looked at him.
“You mean I became useful.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You became the only thing in my life that wasn’t fake.””
A tear fell down his face.
I hated that it affected me.
I hated that part of me remembered the good moments.
But good moments didn’t erase the truth.
My father stepped beside me.
“Your mother knew Daniel was dangerous.””
I looked at the document.
“She knew.””
Robert nodded.
“She planned to stop the marriage.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She wanted to warn you.””
I looked at my father.
“Why didn’t you?””
His face changed.
“I thought she was wrong.””
The answer hurt.
Because once again, he chose silence.
“You didn’t believe her?””
“I believed she was scared.””
“And now?””
He looked at Daniel.
“Now I know she was right.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“Jonathan, I never wanted this.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“You wanted access to my daughter.””
“I loved her.””
“You lied to her.””
Daniel had no response.
Then Chloe suddenly spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at Daniel.
“You knew about the trust?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Her face changed.
“You knew.””
A strange realization crossed her face.
“You weren’t helping my mother.””
Daniel looked away.
“You were helping yourself.””
The room turned against him completely.
Then my phone buzzed.
The sound was small.
But everyone heard it.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
One message.
My blood froze.
*You’re looking in the wrong direction.*
Another message appeared.
*Your father didn’t betray your mother.*
I frowned.
Then the third message arrived.
*He protected the person who did.*
I looked up.
“Who sent that?””
Nobody answered.
Then my father’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed instantly.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Where?””
He ended the call.
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
My father slowly looked toward Robert.
Then Eleanor.
Then me.
“The person who sent that message…”
May you like
He swallowed.
“…was using your mother’s old phone.””
