Chapter 19: The Child My Mother Hid

I stared at the photograph.

At first, my mind refused to understand what I was seeing.

My mother.

Holding a baby.

Smiling.

Alive.

Happy.

But the baby wasn’t me.

The room disappeared around me.

“No.””

The word came out as a whisper.

My father looked at the photograph.

And his face changed.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You knew.””

I looked at him.

“You knew.””

His eyes closed.

That was all the answer I needed.

My entire life had been built on missing pieces.

And every person I loved had been holding one.

“Who is that baby?””

Nobody answered.

Then Robert stepped forward.

“Your brother.””

The word hit harder than anything else that night.

Brother.

I looked at my father.

“Is that true?””

He didn’t speak.

“Dad.””

His voice broke.

“Yes.””

I felt dizzy.

“You had another child?””

My father looked at the floor.

“Your mother did.””

“Did?””

The single word terrified me.

Robert placed the folder on the table.

“The child was born before you.””

I looked at the picture again.

A baby wrapped in a white blanket.

My mother’s hand protecting him.

“Why didn’t I know?””

My father swallowed.

“Because we lost him.””

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked at me.

“He was taken.””

A chill moved through me.

“Taken by who?””

Nobody wanted to answer.

Then Rebecca whispered:

“The Whitmores.””

My eyes moved toward her.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Your mother discovered their involvement after your brother disappeared.””

Robert continued.

“Your mother spent years searching.””

“And she found him?””

Robert looked away.

“Almost.””

The word hurt.

Almost.

Always almost.

My mother almost exposed the truth.

My father almost protected her.

Everyone almost did the right thing.

“Where is he?””

Robert looked at me.

“That is why I came tonight.””

He opened another file.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Adoption papers.

A new name.

My hands trembled.

“What am I looking at?””

Robert answered quietly.

“Your brother survived.””

My breath stopped.

“He’s alive?””

My father sat down.

The strongest man I knew looked completely broken.

“Your mother found out years later.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Robert looked at the recording device.

“Because she never got the chance.””

I stared.

The room became cold.

“What happened?””

Robert looked at my father.

“He knows.””

My father’s eyes filled with tears.

“Jonathan.””

He looked at me.

“I was wrong.””

The words shocked me.

Not because he admitted it.

Because I had waited my entire life to hear them.

“I thought hiding the truth would keep you safe.””

He shook his head.

“But all I did was leave you unprepared.””

I couldn’t speak.

He continued.

“When your mother found out where your brother was, she planned to bring him home.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

My father looked at the floor.

“Because the night she died…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“Someone called her.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

My father looked at Robert.

“Robert.””

The room froze.

Robert didn’t deny it.

“You called her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

Not guilt.

Something worse.

Regret.

“Because I wanted to warn her.””

“About what?””

Robert looked at me.

“About the person who had been controlling everything.””

I shook my head.

“Who?””

Robert took a deep breath.

“The person who arranged your marriage to Daniel.””

My blood ran cold.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Robert looked toward the doorway.

Everyone followed his eyes.

And there stood someone I thought had disappeared from our lives forever.

A man supported by two guards.

Older.

Weak.

But unmistakable.

Daniel’s father.

Alive.

The room exploded with shock.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

His father smiled faintly.

“Hello, son.””

Daniel looked like he had seen a ghost.

“You’re dead.””

The man laughed quietly.

“People believe what they’re told.””

My father stood.

“You orchestrated everything.””

Daniel’s father looked at me.

“No.””

He smiled.

“Not everything.””

I felt a terrible realization forming.

“Then what?””

He looked at the photograph.

“At first, I only wanted your family’s company.””

He looked at Daniel.

“But then I discovered something more valuable.””

My voice was barely audible.

“What?””

His eyes moved to me.

“Your brother.””

Silence.

“He was the key.””

I stared.

“The key to what?””

The man smiled.

“To destroying the Vale family forever.””

Then he reached into his coat.

And pulled out a document.

A document with one name at the bottom.

My brother’s name.

May you like

And the signature belonged to me.

Except I had never signed it.
