Chapter 8: The Hidden Partner
The next morning, Marcus sat across from me at breakfast.
Neither of us touched our food.
The message from the unknown number remained between us.
A question without an answer.
“You know who sent it,” Marcus said.
I looked up.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
I hesitated.
“Someone your father trusted.””
Marcus frowned.
“That doesn’t sound like a bad thing.””
“It depends on why they contacted you.””
He leaned back.
“You’re still protecting me.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“I’m letting you decide.””
That surprised him.
For years, Marcus believed I controlled everything.
The truth was the opposite.
I spent my entire life trying to give him the freedom to become his own person.
Even when that freedom hurt me.
“Who is it?”” he asked again.
I answered.
“Daniel Whitmore.””
Marcus froze.
“The investor?””
I nodded.
Daniel Whitmore had been one of Walter’s closest business partners.
Not a friend who appeared at parties.
A friend who appeared during disasters.
When companies failed.
When deals collapsed.
When everyone else walked away.
“Why would he contact me?””
“Because your father asked him to.””
Marcus stared.
“Asked him to do what?””
I stood.
“Meet him.””
The meeting took place at an old private club downtown.
Marcus looked uncomfortable walking inside.
He had spent years avoiding his father’s business world.
Now he was entering it.
Daniel was waiting near the fireplace.
He looked older than Marcus remembered.
But his eyes were sharp.
“Marcus.””
They shook hands.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Your father would hate how formal that sounds.””
Marcus sat down.
“I received your message.””
“I know.””
“Why now?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then back at Marcus.
“Because Walter wanted me to wait until you had a reason to question everything.””
Marcus’s expression tightened.
“Everyone keeps saying Dad knew things.””
“He did.””
“About Renata?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked away.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
“Because your father believed you were in love.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Daniel sighed.
“No. It isn’t.””
He opened a briefcase.
Inside was a small black folder.
“This belonged to Walter.””
Marcus stared.
“What is it?””
“Evidence.””
“Of what?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Of the reason your father changed everything.””
Marcus opened the folder.
The first page was a financial report.
His eyes moved across the numbers.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“An investigation into Renata Vale.””
Marcus looked up.
“Dad investigated her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he discovered she wasn’t interested in you.””
The words hurt.
Even after everything, they hurt.
“She was interested in my inheritance.””
Daniel nodded.
“But there’s more.””
He flipped another page.
“This was found during the investigation.””
Marcus read it.
Then his face changed.
It was a bank transfer.
A large one.
From a company account connected to Renata.
Sent to someone else.
A person Marcus recognized.
“No.””
His voice was barely audible.
Daniel watched him.
“You know that name?””
Marcus stared at the document.
Because the recipient wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t an old boyfriend.
It wasn’t a random associate.
It was someone close.
Someone who had stood beside him on his wedding day.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
Marcus slowly lifted his eyes.
“Her mother.””
Silence.
Daniel continued.
“Your father discovered Renata’s family had been planning something for years.””
Marcus looked sick.
“What kind of plan?””
Daniel pushed the final document across the table.
“This.””
Marcus read the title.
Then stopped breathing for a second.
*Marriage Agreement Strategy: Hale Estate Acquisition.*
His hands shook.
“She planned this?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
Daniel’s answer was quiet.
“Longer than you think.””
Marcus closed the folder.
“I need to confront her.””
I reached for his arm.
“Be careful.””
He looked at me.
“Why?””
“Because people who are caught don’t always tell the truth.””
Marcus nodded.
But before he could stand, Daniel spoke again.
“There’s one more thing.””
Marcus turned.
Daniel looked serious.
“Your father wasn’t only investigating Renata.””
“What else?””
“He was investigating someone else.””
Marcus frowned.
“Who?””
Daniel slowly said the name.
May you like
And the moment Marcus heard it, his entire face changed.
Because it was a name from our own family.
