Chapter 10: The Name In The Will

The email arrived at 11:47 PM.

Neither of us slept.

Marcus sat at the dining table with his laptop open, staring at the subject line as if opening it would somehow change what was inside.

*The Secret Walter Hale Never Told His Family.*

I stood near the kitchen counter, watching him.

A few months ago, I would have reached over and opened it for him.

I would have tried to protect him from the pain.

But Walter was right.

Some truths could only be understood when a person was ready to face them.

“Open it,” I said.

Marcus looked at me.

“What if I don’t like what I find?””

I walked over and sat across from him.

“Then you deal with it.””

He gave a small, sad smile.

“That’s what Dad would say.””

“Yes.””

His finger hovered over the screen.

Then he clicked.

A scanned document appeared.

At the top was a date.

Twenty-eight years earlier.

Marcus frowned.

“That’s before I was born.””

I nodded.

The document began with a legal statement.

This letter explains the origins of Hale Enterprises and the person who helped create everything my family now owns.

Marcus scrolled.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“Mom.””

“What?””

He turned the laptop toward me.

There was a name.

A name I had never seen before.

*Evelyn Carter.*

Marcus looked confused.

“Who is that?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

But deep down, I felt something.

A strange feeling.

Because Walter had never hidden things from me.

Not important things.

At least, I thought he hadn’t.

Marcus continued reading.

Before I met my wife, before I built my company, I worked with Evelyn Carter. She was the person who believed in my ideas when nobody else did.

Marcus looked up.

“Dad had a business partner?””

“Apparently.””

He kept reading.

The company was built from both our efforts. However, when Evelyn disappeared from the business world, I became the public face of the company.

Marcus leaned back.

“Disappeared?””

I nodded.

“That sounds important.””

It was.

The next paragraph explained that Evelyn had voluntarily signed over her ownership temporarily while dealing with a personal crisis.

But she never returned.

Walter kept building.

The company grew.

And eventually, the world believed it was entirely his.

Marcus looked troubled.

“Did Dad steal from her?””

I looked at him.

“Your father wasn’t perfect.””

He looked surprised.

“But?””

“But I don’t believe he stole from someone.””

“Why?””

“Because he spent his entire life making sure people were treated fairly.””

Marcus looked back at the document.

Then he saw the final section.

His breathing changed.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

He just read.

Then he whispered:

“She’s alive.””

I froze.

“Who?””

“Evelyn Carter.””

He turned the screen.

At the bottom of the letter was Walter’s final instruction.

If my son ever discovers this truth, he must meet Evelyn before making any decisions about the future of the company.

Marcus stared.

“Why would Dad want me to meet her?””

Before I could answer, another email arrived.

This one had an attachment.

A photograph.

Marcus opened it.

It showed a woman standing outside a small house.

Older.

Gray hair.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

Marcus looked at me.

“Mom.””

I already knew.

“What?””

“That’s not just some old business partner.””

I looked closer.

My heart stopped.

Because I had seen that face before.

Not recently.

Years ago.

At Walter’s funeral.

Standing at the back of the crowd.

Watching silently.

“She was there,” I whispered.

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

I stared at the photograph.

“The woman who came to your father’s funeral.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Marcus closed the laptop.

“Why would she come and never say anything?””

I didn’t know.

But one thing was becoming clear.

Walter’s empire had a history nobody knew about.

And someone had spent years making sure that history stayed buried.

The next morning, Marcus and I drove to meet Evelyn Carter.

Neither of us knew what we would find.

But when the door opened, the first thing Evelyn said wasn’t hello.

It was:

“You look just like your father.””

Marcus froze.

May you like

Because before he could introduce himself, Evelyn looked directly at him and added:

“Did Walter finally tell you why he betrayed me?””
