Chapter 14: The Man Who Sold The Secret

Daniel’s office was almost empty when we arrived.

No assistants.

No employees.

Just him sitting behind a desk with a folder in front of him.

Marcus walked in first.

“Who is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That worried me.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“I wish I had found this sooner.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Found what?””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were transaction records.

Emails.

Private agreements.

At the top was a name.

*Richard Hale.*

Marcus stopped.

Again.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him sadly.

“Yes.””

“My uncle?””

Daniel nodded.

“The person who gave Henry information about Walter’s company was Richard.””

Marcus looked like he had been punched.

For years, Richard had been the funny uncle.

The man who told jokes at holidays.

The man who brought gifts.

The man who called Marcus “my boy.””

“How long?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel answered quietly.

“Almost ten years.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Ten years.

A decade of betrayal.

Marcus picked up the documents.

“What information?””

“Company structure. Investments. Weak points.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Money.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying money.””

“Yes.””

“And everyone keeps destroying my family over it.””

Nobody responded.

Because he was right.

Daniel pointed to one document.

“Richard believed Walter cheated him out of a larger role in the company.””

“He wasn’t an owner.””

“No.””

“Then he wanted revenge.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked away.

The anger on his face was mixed with sadness.

Because betrayal from strangers hurts.

But betrayal from family changes how you see the world.

“What does this have to do with Renata?””

Daniel opened another file.

“Richard introduced Henry’s family to certain contacts.””

Marcus frowned.

“You mean…”

“Renata knew about you because Richard told them.””

The room went silent.

The pieces finally connected.

Richard.

Henry.

Renata.

The inheritance.

The wedding.

All of it.

A plan years in the making.

Marcus stood.

“I need to talk to him.””

I grabbed his arm.

“Not angry.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“Not yet.””

“He betrayed Dad.””

“Yes.””

“He used me.””

“Yes.””

“But if you confront him with emotion, he’ll deny everything.””

Marcus took a breath.

He knew I was right.

That hurt him too.

Because for the first time, he wasn’t fighting me.

He was listening.

That evening, we invited Richard to dinner.

A trap.

But a quiet one.

Richard arrived smiling.

“Marcus.””

He hugged him.

The same fake warmth that suddenly looked different.

“I heard you’ve been asking questions.””

Marcus smiled slightly.

“People keep saying that.””

Richard laughed.

“Your father always worried too much.””

Marcus poured him a drink.

“Did he?””

Richard looked confused.

“What?””

“Worry too much.””

“Yes.””

Marcus sat down.

“Like when he investigated you?””

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But we saw it.

Richard recovered quickly.

“Your mother has been filling your head.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He placed the documents on the table.

“Daniel has.””

Richard looked at them.

Then at me.

His expression changed.

“You found these.””

Not a question.

A confession.

Marcus leaned forward.

“How long were you working with Henry Vale?””

Richard went quiet.

Then he sighed.

“I suppose it was only a matter of time.””

My heart sank.

“You admit it?””

Richard looked at Marcus.

“You think your father was innocent?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Richard continued.

“Your father destroyed people to build that company.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

Richard leaned back.

“Ask your mother what happened to Henry’s family.””

I felt cold.

Because that was the same question Renata had planted.

The same accusation.

Richard smiled.

“You still don’t know everything.””

Marcus stood.

“Then tell me.””

Richard looked at him.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because the truth will hurt you more than it hurts me.””

He left.

But before closing the door, he turned.

“Ask your mother why Walter paid Henry Vale millions before he died.””

The door shut.

Marcus looked at me.

I didn’t know what to say.

Because there was one thing Richard was right about.

May you like

There was still a secret.

A secret Walter had taken to his grave.
