Chapter 4: The Woman Behind The Smile

Marcus stared at the email on his phone as if the words might rearrange themselves into something less painful.

They didn’t.

The chapel remained frozen around him.

The guests who had arrived expecting a beautiful ceremony were now watching a family collapse in real time. The flowers were still perfectly arranged. The candles still flickered along the aisle. The musicians still held their instruments, waiting for a moment that would never come.

But the wedding had already changed.

Marcus looked at Renata.

“Why is your name on this?””

She crossed her arms.

“Because your mother is trying to make me look guilty.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You’re really going to believe her over me?””

The question should have sounded emotional.

Instead, it sounded rehearsed.

Marcus noticed.

For the first time, he noticed all the little things he had ignored.

The way Renata always redirected conversations.

The way she became upset whenever his mother asked reasonable questions.

The way every future plan somehow involved money, property, or status.

His best friend Daniel, who had been standing near the back of the chapel, slowly walked forward.

“Marcus.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I didn’t want to get involved.””

Renata immediately snapped.

“Then don’t.””

Daniel looked at her.

“But I think he deserves to know.””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“Know what?””

Daniel reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his phone.

“Three weeks ago, Renata asked me something.””

Renata’s expression changed.

“Daniel, don’t.””

He ignored her.

“She asked if I knew how much your father’s company was worth.””

Marcus stared.

“She asked you that?””

Daniel nodded.

“I thought it was normal curiosity. Then she asked if your mother had access to everything.””

The chapel became quieter.

Renata stepped closer.

“You’re twisting a private conversation.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. I’m remembering it.””

Marcus looked back at Renata.

“Did you ask him that?””

She sighed dramatically.

“Of course I did. I was going to marry you. I needed to understand your family.””

“Understand my family?””

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“Or understand my money?””

The accusation landed harder than anyone expected.

Renata’s face hardened.

“You’re being manipulated.””

“By who?””

“Your mother.””

Marcus looked down at his phone again.

The email from the attorney remained open.

Attached documents.

Messages.

Financial requests.

A timeline.

All organized.

All real.

He remembered every conversation with his mother.

Every warning.

Every time she had tried to slow him down.

He remembered telling her she was jealous.

The memory made his stomach twist.

Meanwhile, miles away, I sat quietly in my office.

Claire watched me.

“You knew this would happen.””

I looked out the window.

“No.””

She raised an eyebrow.

“You didn’t?””

“I hoped it wouldn’t.””

That surprised her.

I turned around.

“Claire, no mother wants to be proven right when the person she loves is hurting.””

She lowered her eyes.

“You still love him.””

“He’s my son.””

“Even after today?””

I looked at the family photograph on my desk.

Marcus was eight years old in that picture.

Missing front teeth.

Holding a baseball glove.

Standing beside his father and me.

“He can make mistakes,” I said softly.

“But he’s still my child.””

Back at the chapel, Marcus walked away from Renata.

Just a few steps.

But everyone noticed.

“Marcus,” Renata called.

He stopped.

“You’re not seriously doing this right now.””

He turned.

“Doing what?””

“Questioning me on our wedding day.””

He gave a bitter laugh.

“Our wedding day?””

His eyes moved around the chapel.

“The woman I thought I was marrying wouldn’t care more about this ceremony than the truth.””

Renata’s confidence cracked.

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“Because your mother got what she wanted.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because I’m realizing she was trying to protect me.””

That was the moment Renata lost control.

Her voice rose.

“Protect you? She has controlled your entire life!””

A few guests exchanged looks.

Marcus noticed.

“Controlled?””

“Yes.””

“She controlled my inheritance?””

Renata went silent.

“No.””

“Then what exactly did she control?””

Nothing.

Because there was no answer.

The silence exposed her more than any accusation could.

Marcus slowly walked toward the chapel doors.

The same doors where he had blocked his mother only hours earlier.

The same place where he had told her she didn’t belong.

Now he stood there alone.

His phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time from the attorney.

*There is one more document your mother requested we show you. It was written by your father before his death.*

Marcus opened it.

The first sentence made his hands shake.

*“My son Marcus will only receive full control if he chooses character over comfort.””*

He read the next line.

Then another.

And suddenly, he understood.

His father had known.

Walter had seen the danger before anyone else.

But why?

Because hidden inside the document was a name Marcus never expected to see.

May you like

A name from his father’s past.

A person who had warned Walter about Renata years before she ever entered their lives.
