Chapter 15: The Debt Walter Carried
Marcus didn’t accuse me.
That was what hurt the most.
He just looked at me.
Waiting.
The silence was worse than anger.
“Mom.””
I sat down.
“I know what you’re going to ask.””
“Did Dad pay Henry Vale?””
I looked at the floor.
“Yes.””
His face tightened.
“How much?””
“Five million dollars.””
He stood.
“Why?””
I wished I had an easy answer.
I didn’t.
“Because your father felt responsible.””
“For what?””
I looked at him.
“For Henry’s daughter.””
Marcus went still.
“Renata?””
I nodded.
The room felt smaller.
Years of secrets.
Years of missing pieces.
All coming together.
“Your father believed Henry’s mistakes destroyed his own family.””
Marcus shook his head.
“But why pay him?””
“He wasn’t paying Henry.””
“Then who?””
I took a breath.
“Renata’s younger sister.””
Marcus looked confused.
“She had nothing to do with this.””
“Exactly.””
I explained.
After Henry lost his position, his family struggled.
His choices affected everyone around him.
His daughter became sick.
She needed treatment.
Walter paid because he believed innocent people shouldn’t suffer because of someone else’s mistakes.
Marcus sat down slowly.
“So Dad helped them.””
“Yes.””
“Then why does Renata say he betrayed them?””
“Because people remember what benefits them.””
Marcus looked away.
That was the hardest lesson.
The truth was rarely simple.
Walter had made mistakes.
He had hidden things.
He had hurt Evelyn.
But he had also spent his life trying to repair damage.
“I should have known.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“I trusted the wrong people.””
“Yes.””
“But I also ignored the right one.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew that pain.
A few days later, Marcus requested a meeting with Renata.
This time, it was different.
He wasn’t going to beg.
He wasn’t going to ask for answers.
He was going to listen.
Renata arrived confident.
She thought she still had control.
“Marcus.””
He sat across from her.
“We need to talk.””
She smiled.
“I agree.””
He placed a folder on the table.
Her expression changed.
“What is that?””
“Proof.””
Her smile disappeared.
“Proof of what?””
“That you knew about my family’s money before you knew about me.””
Silence.
Then she laughed.
“You’re really going to believe those people?””
Marcus watched her.
No anger.
No emotion.
Just observation.
“That’s what you always did.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“You made everyone else look suspicious so nobody looked at you.””
For the first time, Renata had no immediate response.
Marcus continued.
“You knew about Evelyn.””
Nothing.
“You knew about Henry.””
Nothing.
“You worked with Richard.””
Her face changed.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But enough.
Marcus saw it.
“You did.””
Renata leaned forward.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“I understand now.””
She looked at him.
“Your father ruined my family.””
Marcus shook his head.
“My father helped your family.””
“He owed us.””
“No.””
He stood.
“He tried to fix what he broke.””
Renata’s eyes filled with anger.
“You’re choosing her?””
Marcus looked confused.
“Who?””
“Your mother.””
He looked toward the window.
Then back at her.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
He turned to leave.
But before he reached the door, Renata spoke.
“You think this is over?””
Marcus stopped.
She smiled.
A cold smile.
“Your father left you the company.””
A pause.
“But he didn’t leave you the biggest problem.””
Marcus turned.
“What problem?””
Renata whispered:
“The reason Walter was really afraid of me.””
She pulled out her phone.
Pressed a button.
And showed him a message.
One message.
From Walter.
Sent three days before his death.
Marcus read it.
Then his entire face changed.
May you like
Because the message contained four words:
*I know what you did.*
