Chapter 3: The Message That Changed Everything

Marcus hated waiting.

I knew that about him.

Ever since he was a child, patience had been his greatest weakness.

When he wanted something, he wanted it immediately.

A new bicycle.

A college decision.

A business opportunity.

A relationship.

He rushed toward every door without checking what was behind it.

And Renata knew exactly how to use that.

At 3:10 PM, I was sitting in my office overlooking the city.

The same office Walter had built for me.

The walls were covered with photographs of our family.

Marcus’s graduation.

His first job.

His twenty-first birthday.

I kept every memory.

Even after he tried to erase me.

My assistant, Claire, entered carrying a tablet.

“Everything is ready,” she said.

I nodded.

“Did he receive the message?””

She looked at the screen.

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

For the first time all day, I allowed myself to feel the pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

Because no amount of money could replace the moment your child looked at you and said you didn’t belong.

“Do you want to delay the call?”” Claire asked.

I looked at her.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

I took a deep breath.

“Walter spent years building something for Marcus. Today, Marcus needs to understand what it means.””

Meanwhile, inside the chapel, the wedding had stopped.

That was what Claire later told me.

The ceremony never began.

Marcus’s phone had buzzed once.

Then twice.

He ignored it the first time.

The second time, Renata noticed.

“Who keeps calling you?”” she asked.

Marcus looked down.

My name was glowing on the screen.

“Mom,” he said.

Renata’s expression changed.

“Don’t answer.””

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

Somewhere deep inside, my son still knew I mattered.

He stepped away from the altar area.

“What does she want?”” Renata asked sharply.

“I don’t know.””

“Then don’t let her ruin today.””

Marcus answered.

“Hello?””

Claire’s voice came through.

“Mr. Hale?””

“Yes.””

“This is Claire Morgan calling on behalf of your mother.””

His jaw tightened.

“What does she want?””

Claire paused.

“Your mother wants you to know that the estate transfer request has been canceled.””

Marcus went silent.

“What estate transfer?””

Renata immediately walked closer.

“Put it on speaker.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because this affects both of us.””

Claire continued.

“Mr. Hale, two weeks ago your fiancée requested documentation regarding your father’s assets. We have records of every conversation and every submitted request.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying your mother protected you from making a decision that could have cost you everything.””

Renata grabbed his arm.

“Hang up.””

Marcus pulled away.

“Wait.””

Claire continued.

“Your father’s companies, properties, and investments remain under your mother’s authority. Your mother was preparing a trust that would eventually provide you with control after proper legal review.””

Marcus whispered:

“How much?””

Claire answered.

“Your father’s holdings are currently valued at approximately eighty-seven million dollars.””

The chapel went silent.

Everyone heard.

Renata’s face lost color.

Marcus looked toward her slowly.

“You knew?””

She forced a smile.

“I knew your family was comfortable.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

The confidence disappeared from her eyes.

And for the first time, Marcus saw what I had seen from the beginning.

Not love.

Calculation.

Claire’s voice came through again.

“There is one more thing, Mr. Hale.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“What?””

“Your mother asked us to deliver a personal message.””

He swallowed.

“Play it.””

A recording began.

My voice filled the chapel.

“Marcus, if you’re hearing this, it means you chose to believe I was your enemy.””

His eyes lowered.

“I never wanted your father’s money. I never wanted control over your life. I only wanted you to become the kind of man Walter believed you could be.””

A tear fell down Marcus’s face.

But I wasn’t finished.

“Your father left you everything he had because he loved you. I protected it because I loved you. The question is whether you can understand the difference.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Renata suddenly whispered:

“Marcus, don’t listen to her. She’s manipulating you.””

Marcus looked at her.

And this time, he didn’t see the woman he had defended.

He saw the truth.

Then his phone rang again.

A new message appeared.

Not from me.

From the attorney handling Walter’s estate.

The subject line made Marcus freeze.

And beneath it was one name.

Renata Vale.
