Chapter 19: The Person We Trusted Most
The office door slowly closed behind us.
Nobody spoke.
Because the person standing there was the last person we expected to see.
Claire.
My assistant.
The woman who had stood beside me through every difficult moment.
The woman who had helped uncover the truth.
The woman who had delivered the messages.
The woman who knew every secret.
Marcus stared at her.
“Claire?””
Her face was pale.
For the first time since I met her, she looked afraid.
Not nervous.
Afraid.
“Marcus,” she whispered.
He stepped back.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
But the pain behind it was obvious.
“Tell me I’m wrong.””
Claire looked at me.
And that was the moment I knew.
She had been carrying something.
Something she never told me.
“Claire,” I said.
She closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“That’s not enough anymore.””
Claire walked farther into the room.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Wanted what?””
“The damage.””
Daniel stood.
“Start explaining.””
Claire looked at the documents on the desk.
Then at the photograph.
“You found everything.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Did you bring Renata into my life?””
Silence.
A painful, terrible silence.
Then Claire nodded.
The room changed.
I felt like the air disappeared.
Marcus looked at me.
“Mom.””
I couldn’t speak.
Because I didn’t understand either.
Claire had worked for me for eight years.
She knew Walter.
She knew Marcus.
She knew our family.
“Why?”” Marcus asked.
Claire sat down slowly.
“Because I knew Walter was hiding something.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
She looked at him.
“Because I was trying to fix what he did.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Claire took a breath.
“My father worked for Walter.””
Nobody moved.
“My father was one of the employees affected when Walter removed Henry Vale from the company.””
Marcus shook his head.
“So your family blamed Dad?””
“Yes.””
“But you helped him?””
Claire looked at me.
“I did.””
I felt a deep sadness.
Not anger.
Sadness.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The timing.
The information.
The access.
Claire had been close enough to know everything.
“You introduced Renata,” Marcus said.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire looked down.
“Because Henry believed Renata could expose Walter’s secrets.””
“Henry?””
Claire nodded.
“But I didn’t know how far they would go.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You expect us to believe that?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I don’t.””
She reached into her bag.
Then placed a small recorder on the desk.
“I recorded them.””
Daniel looked at it.
“Who?””
“Renata and Richard.””
Marcus stared.
“Why?””
“Because I realized too late that they weren’t trying to expose Walter.””
Claire looked at me.
“They were trying to destroy everything.””
I picked up the recorder.
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Because I was ashamed.””
She looked at Marcus.
“And because I knew if I told you the truth, you would never trust me again.””
Marcus answered immediately.
“You’re right.””
The words hurt.
But they were honest.
Claire nodded.
“I deserve that.””
Daniel played the recording.
Renata’s voice filled the room.
“Once Marcus signs the transfer, everything belongs to us.””
Richard laughed.
“He’s easier than Walter ever was.””
A chill moved through me.
Then Renata spoke again.
“His mother is the only problem.””
Richard answered:
“She always has been.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Listening to strangers insult me hurt.
But hearing people he trusted plan against him hurt more.
The recording continued.
Claire’s voice appeared briefly.
“I don’t think this is right.””
Renata responded:
“Then remember why you’re here.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Claire looked at Marcus.
“I was wrong.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Then something unexpected happened.
Marcus walked over to the desk.
Picked up the recorder.
And said:
“Thank you for bringing proof.””
Claire looked surprised.
“But I betrayed you.””
“Yes.””
He looked at her.
“And you have to live with that.””
She nodded.
“But you also helped stop them.””
Claire started crying.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
The way people cry when they finally stop pretending they’re fine.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What happened?””
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“Renata disappeared.””
My heart sank.
“What do you mean?””
“She left the city.””
Marcus grabbed his jacket.
“Where?””
Daniel looked at the message.
“She took the original company documents.””
Silence.
Because everyone understood.
Renata wasn’t running away.
She was making one final move.
May you like
And the document she stole wasn’t just about money.
It was the one document that could decide who truly owned Walter’s empire.
