Chapter 9: The Person Behind The Door
“Dad…”
The voice came from the staircase.
Everyone froze.
I knew that voice.
Dad knew it too.
His face changed before the person even appeared.
“No.””
A figure slowly stepped into the light.
A young man.
Mid-twenties.
Tired eyes.
A nervous expression.
Dad stared at him like he was seeing someone impossible.
“Michael?””
The man stopped halfway down the stairs.
“Hi, Daniel.””
The room exploded into silence.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Richard looked away.
And Dad…
Dad looked broken.
“You’re alive.””
Michael swallowed.
“I know.””
I looked at Dad.
“Who is he?””
Dad didn’t answer immediately.
He couldn’t.
Because whatever Michael represented was something deeper than the documents, the house, or Vanessa.
It was something from before me.
From before Mom.
From before everything I knew.
Dad finally spoke.
“Michael was my father’s assistant.””
Michael nodded.
“Twenty years ago.””
Dad’s eyes narrowed.
“You disappeared.””
“I was forced to.””
Richard laughed quietly.
“Don’t make yourself sound innocent.””
Michael looked at him.
“At least I’m not pretending.””
Dad looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Michael walked down the stairs.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like he knew one wrong movement would destroy everything.
“I came here because I knew this would happen.””
Dad frowned.
“What would happen?””
“That Vanessa would eventually find the documents.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You lied to me.””
Michael looked at her.
“You lied to everyone.””
Her face tightened.
“You said you were helping me.””
“No.””
Michael shook his head.
“I said I was helping Daniel uncover the truth.””
Dad stared at Vanessa.
“She thought you were working with her?””
Michael nodded.
“She thought I was helping Richard.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“No.””
Michael looked at him.
“You made the mistake twenty years ago.””
Dad stepped closer.
“Explain.””
Michael looked at the old documents on the table.
“Your father didn’t hide money from Thomas.””
Dad listened.
“He hid evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
Michael took a deep breath.
“Richard was stealing from the company.””
Richard’s face darkened.
“That’s a lie.””
Michael ignored him.
“Your father discovered it. But before he could expose him, Richard manipulated Thomas into believing Daniel was responsible.””
Dad looked shocked.
“Thomas thought I betrayed him.””
“Yes.””
Michael nodded.
“He spent years angry at the wrong person.””
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“And she knew?””
Michael looked down.
“She knew part of it.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. I didn’t know the whole story.””
Dad laughed bitterly.
“That’s what you keep saying.””
She looked at him.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
He stepped back.
“Every answer creates another lie.””
I watched Vanessa’s face fall.
For the first time, she looked like she understood she had lost everything.
Not the house.
Not the money.
Him.
Dad turned to Michael.
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
Michael looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of Richard.””
The room went quiet.
Michael continued.
“He threatened my family.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You should be careful.””
Michael looked at him.
“No. You should.””
Dad noticed something.
“What?””
Michael reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small flash drive.
“I kept a copy.””
Richard immediately moved.
Dad stepped between them.
“Don’t.””
Richard stopped.
Michael placed the drive on the table.
“Everything is here.””
Dad stared.
“What everything?””
“The original company records.””
“The proof?””
Michael nodded.
“And the proof that Vanessa wasn’t the person who started this.””
Everyone looked at him.
Vanessa whispered:
“What?””
Michael looked at Dad.
“She was recruited.””
Dad slowly turned.
“By who?””
Michael didn’t answer.
He looked toward Richard.
Dad’s face changed.
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“Yes.””
Dad shook his head.
“My father trusted you.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“Your father destroyed me.””
“And you destroyed my family.””
Richard looked at me.
“No.””
He pointed toward the house.
“This family was already destroyed long before I arrived.””
Dad moved closer.
“You’re leaving.””
Richard smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
Richard looked at the documents.
“The house was never the goal.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Dad stared.
“Then what was?””
Richard looked at me.
“The girl.””
My heart stopped.
Dad immediately stepped in front of me.
“What did you say?””
Richard smiled.
“Emma has something you don’t know she has.””
Dad’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard looked at the stairs.
“The one thing everyone has been searching for.””
I felt my hand move toward my pocket.
The old silver bracelet.
Mom’s bracelet.
Richard noticed.
May you like
And smiled.
“Exactly.””
