Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

Dad didn’t move.

For several seconds, he just stood there with his keys in his hand.

I watched his face change.

Confusion.

Anger.

Then something I had never seen before.

Fear.

“My father’s business partner died.””

Vanessa looked down.

“That’s what everyone was told.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“Who are you talking about?””

Vanessa didn’t answer her.

She only looked at Dad.

“His name was Richard Hale.””

Dad’s grip tightened around the keys.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“He wasn’t supposed to exist anymore.””

Dad stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa walked back to the table and sat down.

“I think you should hear the whole story.””

Dad laughed quietly.

“You don’t get to decide when I hear the truth.””

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“You want the truth? Fine.””

Nobody interrupted.

“Twenty years ago, your father and Richard built a company together.””

Dad nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“They were partners.””

“I know.””

“But they weren’t equal.””

Vanessa tapped the papers.

“Your grandfather trusted your father more.””

Dad’s face hardened.

“My father trusted the person who worked harder.””

“Or the person who was easier to control.””

Rachel shook her head.

“This is insane.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“Richard believed he was betrayed.””

Dad looked at the floor.

“Richard disappeared after the lawsuit.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Because your father made sure he couldn’t come back.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Dad.

He looked shocked.

Not because he believed her.

Because he remembered something.

“Don’t.””

His voice was low.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“You remember.””

“I remember a man who stole from my family.””

“You remember what you were told.””

Dad walked toward the window.

“I was twenty-eight years old.””

“Yes.””

“I watched my father lose everything because of him.””

“Yes.””

“I watched my mother cry every night.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s voice softened.

“But you never asked what happened to Richard.””

Dad turned.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying he survived.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Dad looked at the documents again.

“And he contacted Thomas.””

“Yes.””

“Then Thomas helped you.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Thomas wanted revenge.””

Dad shook his head.

“My brother wouldn’t do that.””

“You don’t know what Thomas became after years of feeling forgotten.””

Dad looked angry.

“But you do?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa hesitated.

And that hesitation told us there was another secret.

Dad noticed.

“How did you know Thomas?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I met him before I met you.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes lifted.

“Two years before our wedding.””

Dad went completely still.

I felt like the entire house had stopped breathing.

“You knew my brother.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then at Dad.

“Because I knew you would never marry me if you knew.””

The honesty of the answer was terrifying.

Dad stepped back.

“You planned everything.””

“No.””

“You found my family’s secrets.””

“I found a way to survive.””

“You manipulated me.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Did I?””

Dad stared at her.

“You think this is my fault?””

Vanessa stood.

“You had everything.””

“I had a broken family.””

“You had money.””

“I had a daughter who lost her mother.””

“You had a house everyone wanted.””

Dad’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa smiled slightly.

“It means you never understood what people saw when they looked at you.””

“I don’t care what people saw.””

“But they cared.””

She picked up her purse.

“Richard cared.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Where is he?””

Vanessa stopped.

A long silence followed.

Then she said:

“Closer than you think.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

The power went out.

The house went completely dark.

I heard Rachel gasp.

Then footsteps.

Not ours.

Someone was moving downstairs.

Dad immediately grabbed my hand.

“Stay behind me.””

A door opened somewhere near the kitchen.

A man’s voice echoed through the darkness.

“Daniel.””

Dad froze.

Because he knew the voice.

I felt his hand tighten around mine.

The man stepped into the faint light from the windows.

Older.

Gray hair.

Calm.

Like he belonged there.

Dad whispered:

“Richard.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Vanessa stood behind us.

May you like

And for the first time...

she looked like she was afraid of him too.
