Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Plan
Dad locked the front door.
Nobody was leaving.
Not until he understood what was happening.
Vanessa sat silently at the table.
For the first time since she entered our lives, she wasn’t controlling the room.
She was waiting.
Dad placed the document in front of him.
“Read it again.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You already know what it says.””
“I want to hear you say it.””
She looked annoyed.
“Thomas wanted the property divided.””
“Between who?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You.””
A pause.
“And?””
She didn’t answer.
Dad’s voice became sharper.
“Vanessa.””
She sighed.
“Me.””
Rachel whispered:
“You?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Thomas believed Daniel’s family ignored him for years.””
Dad laughed quietly.
“My dead brother suddenly decided you deserved part of my home?””
“He trusted me.””
“No.””
Dad shook his head.
“He barely knew you.””
Vanessa looked away.
And that was when I noticed something.
A small reaction.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Dad noticed too.
“You knew Thomas before you met me.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Didn’t you?””
The silence answered.
Dad stepped closer.
“How?””
Vanessa finally looked up.
“He contacted me.””
“When?””
“Before we got married.””
My heart dropped.
Dad stared.
“Before?””
“Yes.””
“You’re saying my brother contacted you before our wedding?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He wanted someone to listen.””
Dad laughed once.
It wasn’t happiness.
It was disbelief.
“And you happened to be there.””
“Yes.””
“And then you happened to marry me.””
Her face tightened.
“Careful.””
“No.””
Dad’s voice rose.
“You be careful.””
I had never heard him talk to her like that.
Not once.
He always defended her.
Always explained things away.
Now he looked like he didn’t recognize her.
“Did Thomas tell you about the house?””
“Yes.””
“Did he tell you about the money?””
“Yes.””
“Did he tell you I trusted him?””
Vanessa looked down.
Dad nodded slowly.
“You never loved me.””
She looked up.
“That’s not true.””
“Then what was I?””
She had no answer.
The room became painfully quiet.
Then her phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Vanessa quickly grabbed it.
Dad held out his hand.
“Give me the phone.””
“No.””
“Give me the phone.””
She stood.
“This is private.””
Rachel laughed.
“After everything tonight, you still think privacy is the issue?””
Dad reached for the phone.
Vanessa stepped back.
And accidentally dropped it.
The screen lit up.
No one touched it.
But we saw enough.
A message preview appeared.
From someone named:
Michael.
Dad stared.
“Michael again.””
Vanessa picked up the phone quickly.
“It’s nothing.””
Dad shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Emma.””
I knew immediately what he meant.
The recording.
I ran upstairs and brought the tablet back.
Dad played the section again.
Vanessa’s voice.
Then the man’s voice.
This time, clearer.
“I told you, Michael, Daniel trusts you.””
Everyone froze.
Dad paused the recording.
The voice.
The name.
It connected.
Rachel whispered:
“Michael.””
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“Who is Michael?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Dad looked at the phone.
Then the documents.
Then the recording.
“You weren’t working alone.””
Her silence was louder than words.
Dad walked toward the kitchen counter and grabbed his keys.
“Where are you going?””
Vanessa asked.
“To find out who else has been lying to me.””
She stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t.””
He stopped.
“Why?””
Her face changed.
Because she knew.
She had finally lost control.
“Because Michael isn’t who you think he is.””
Dad stared.
“Then who is he?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time that night, she looked afraid.
“He’s your father’s old business partner.””
Dad froze.
“My father’s business partner died years ago.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“No.””
She whispered:
“He didn’t.””
Dad slowly turned around.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa looked at the document again.
“The man helping me destroy your life…”
May you like
She paused.
“…is the man your family buried a lie about twenty years ago.””
