Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
The only sound in the room was the ticking clock above the fireplace.
Dad stood there holding the documents like they were something dangerous.
Vanessa’s face had gone pale.
“Daniel, you’re misunderstanding.””
Dad looked up slowly.
“Am I?””
She stepped closer.
“You’re upset. You just walked into an emotional situation, and now you’re looking for someone to blame.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No, Vanessa. He’s looking at paperwork with his name on it.””
Vanessa glared at her.
“You need to leave.””
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“Two minutes ago, I was your sister. Now I’m a problem?””
Dad didn’t take his eyes off Vanessa.
“What is this?””
“It’s nothing.””
“Nothing has my signature.””
“It was a draft.””
“A draft for what?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You always said the house was too much responsibility.””
Dad’s eyebrows tightened.
“I never said I wanted to transfer ownership.””
“You said you trusted me.””
“I trusted my wife.””
The words hung in the air.
I watched Vanessa’s expression change.
Not sadness.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
She walked toward him carefully.
“Daniel, think about everything I’ve done for this family.””
Dad looked at me.
Then back at her.
“Everything you’ve done?””
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward me.
“That girl has always been difficult.””
My stomach dropped.
Dad immediately stepped between us.
“Do not do that.””
“Do what?””
“Turn this into Emma’s fault.””
“She’s the reason we’re having this conversation.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You are.””
Vanessa looked shocked.
For the first time, she looked like she realized Dad wasn’t going to protect her.
I had spent two years believing Vanessa controlled everything.
But standing there, I saw something different.
She was scared.
Dad opened the folder again.
“Why does this document say the transfer becomes active after my death?””
My breath caught.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Dad’s voice lowered.
“Answer me.””
“It was for security.””
“Security?””
“Yes. If something happened to you, I wanted to make sure Emma and I were protected.””
Dad stared at her.
“Emma?””
Vanessa froze.
She knew she had made a mistake.
Dad noticed too.
“You keep saying Emma is a burden.””
“That’s not what I meant.””
“But you used her name.””
“I’m her stepmother.””
“No.””
Dad shook his head.
“You married me. That doesn’t automatically make you her mother.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“You’re really going to throw away our marriage because of one bad day?””
I almost laughed.
One bad day.
She had no idea how many days I remembered.
The mornings she ignored me.
The dinners where she told me to eat after everyone else.
The nights I cried quietly because I was afraid Dad would think I was lying.
Dad looked at me.
“Emma.””
I stepped closer.
“Yes?””
“Tell me everything.””
I froze.
“Everything?””
“Everything you didn’t tell me because you were scared.””
My lips trembled.
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“Daniel, don’t pressure her.””
Dad turned.
“I’m not pressuring her.””
“You’re putting her in the middle.””
“She was already in the middle.””
The room became silent again.
I looked down at my hands.
Then I finally said the words I had been holding inside for months.
“She told me you would choose her over me.””
Dad closed his eyes.
“She said you were tired of being my father.””
His jaw tightened.
“She said if I caused problems, you would send me away.””
Dad looked like someone had punched him.
“I never said that.””
“I know now.””
My voice cracked.
“But I didn’t know before.””
Dad came toward me.
“I’m sorry.””
Those three words broke something inside me.
Because I realized how long I had been waiting to hear them.
He hugged me.
And for the first time in months, I stopped feeling like I had to be careful.
Behind us, Vanessa whispered:
“You’re making a mistake.””
Dad released me.
“No. I made one already.””
She looked at him.
“Leaving me?””
“Trusting you without asking questions.””
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
“You’ll regret this.””
Dad didn’t move.
“Where are you going?””
“To get a lawyer.””
Rachel scoffed.
“About what?””
Vanessa looked directly at Dad.
“You’ll find out.””
Then she walked toward the door.
But before she reached it, Dad’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?””
Dad didn’t answer.
He picked up.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through the speaker.
I couldn’t hear everything.
Only Dad’s side.
“What?””
A pause.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Another pause.
Then his face went completely still.
“Send me the copy.””
He ended the call.
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
He stared at Vanessa.
“Who is Michael?””
Vanessa stopped moving.
The color drained from her face.
“Why?””
Dad held up his phone.
“The bank just told me someone attempted to access our account using my personal information.””
He looked at the envelope.
Then at her.
“And the name attached to the request wasn’t yours.””
Vanessa said nothing.
Dad’s voice became quiet.
“It was Michael’s.””
Rachel whispered:
“Vanessa…”
But Dad wasn’t listening.
Because I knew that name.
I had heard it before.
From the recording.

And when Dad looked at me, I knew he realized the same thing.
The tablet upstairs wasn’t the only secret in this house.
