Chapter 5: The Brother Who Left A Secret

Dad stared at the envelope on the kitchen table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody even breathed.

Then he slowly reached forward and picked it up.

“Thomas has been dead for three years.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

Dad looked at her.

“Then explain why his signature is here.””

She didn’t answer.

That was the moment I realized Vanessa wasn’t just caught.

She had been waiting for this.

Waiting for Dad to discover something.

The question was why.

Dad opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was another copy of the property document.

This one had an additional page attached.

His eyes moved across it.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Vanessa sat down.

“I told you there were things you didn’t know.””

Dad looked at her.

“Start talking.””

She leaned back.

“Your brother wasn’t just your brother.””

Dad frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Thomas knew about the house.””

“Of course he knew about the house.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He knew everything.””

Dad’s expression hardened.

“Everything about what?””

She looked at the papers.

“About your father’s will.””

The room went quiet.

I had never heard Dad talk much about his parents.

They had passed away before I was born.

But I knew the house meant something to him.

It wasn’t just a building.

It was where his family had lived.

Where he grew up.

Where he brought Mom after they got married.

Dad lowered the document.

“My parents left this house to me.””

Vanessa nodded.

“That’s what you believed.””

Rachel looked confused.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa glanced at her.

“I’m saying Daniel never knew the entire story.””

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“Why would Thomas hide something from me?””

Vanessa smiled slightly.

“Because he was angry.””

The answer hit Dad harder than I expected.

“Angry about what?””

She didn’t respond immediately.

Instead, she looked toward the stairs.

Toward my room.

Then back at Dad.

“Your father changed his will after finding out Thomas had been hiding money problems.””

Dad shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

“No.””

Dad stood.

“I was there.””

“Were you?””

His face changed.

A tiny crack of doubt appeared.

Vanessa noticed.

“You were always the responsible son.””

Dad said nothing.

“You got the house. You got the business. Everyone trusted you.””

She leaned forward.

“Thomas spent his whole life believing you took everything from him.””

Dad looked away.

I could tell he was remembering.

Old conversations.

Old arguments.

Things I had never heard.

“But why would he sign this?””

Vanessa’s voice became softer.

“Because he wanted what he believed was his.””

Dad looked down.

“Thomas would never work with you.””

Vanessa smiled.

“You’d be surprised.””

I felt uncomfortable.

Something about the way she said it sounded like she was enjoying watching Dad question everything.

Dad picked up his phone.

“I’m calling the attorney who handled my parents’ estate.””

Vanessa didn’t stop him.

That worried me more.

The call connected.

“Mr. Carter? This is Daniel.””

He paused.

“Yes, I need information regarding my parents’ property documents.””

Dad listened.

Then his expression slowly changed.

“What?””

He walked away from the table.

“No, that can’t be right.””

A few seconds passed.

Then:

“Send me everything.””

He ended the call.

I watched him.

“Dad?””

He sat down.

For the first time that night, he looked tired.

“There was an amendment.””

Rachel frowned.

“An amendment to the will?””

Dad nodded.

“Six months before my father died.””

“What did it say?””

Dad looked at the papers.

“Thomas was supposed to receive a percentage of the property value.””

My stomach tightened.

“But you said the house was yours.””

“I thought it was.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“And that’s why Thomas was angry.””

Dad ignored her.

“Did you know about this?””

She looked away.

“Eventually.””

“Eventually?””

“When I married you.””

Dad stared.

“You married me knowing this?””

“I married you because I loved you.””

Nobody believed that sentence.

Not even her.

Dad stood.

“You knew about a legal dispute over my family’s home and never told me?””

“You wouldn’t have listened.””

“That wasn’t your choice.””

Vanessa suddenly slammed her hand on the table.

“You want to know what wasn’t my choice?””

Everyone froze.

She pointed at me.

“Living in this house knowing I would never truly belong.””

Dad looked disappointed.

Not angry.

Disappointed.

“That is what you’re still making this about?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice dropped.

“It’s about what happens next.””

Dad stared.

“What happens next?””

Vanessa looked at the documents.

“Thomas didn’t just leave a signature.””

She opened the folder and pulled out another page.

“He left instructions.””

Dad grabbed the paper.

His eyes scanned it.

Then he stopped.

“What?””

I moved closer.

“What does it say?””

Dad didn’t answer.

He just looked at Vanessa.

“Where did you get this?””

She smiled.

“From the person who has been helping me.””

The room went cold.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

May you like

Then whispered:

“The person who has been inside this house longer than you realize.””
