Chapter 4: The Voice On The Recording

Dad and I sat at the kitchen table while Vanessa stood near the doorway.

Nobody wanted to leave.

Not because they wanted to stay.

Because everyone was waiting to understand how deep the lie went.

Dad placed the tablet in front of him.

“Is this the recording?””

I nodded.

“I didn’t mean to record her.””

“I know.””

His voice softened.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You’re really going to listen to a child’s secret recording?””

Dad looked at her.

“She’s my daughter.””

The answer was simple.

But Vanessa reacted like it hurt.

Dad pressed play.

At first, there was only silence.

Then Vanessa’s voice filled the kitchen.

“Emma keeps asking questions.””

My face went cold.

Dad looked at me.

I couldn’t look back.

The recording continued.

“She’s becoming suspicious.””

A man answered.

I couldn’t hear his words clearly.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

“Daniel trusts me. He won’t think his own wife would do something like this.””

Dad’s hand tightened around the tablet.

Rachel whispered:

“Oh my God.””

The recording continued.

“I just need him to sign everything.””

The man spoke.

Vanessa replied:

“Once the house is transferred, everything becomes easier.””

Dad stopped the recording.

Nobody breathed.

Vanessa looked furious.

“You don’t understand the context.””

Dad stood.

“Then explain it.””

“It wasn’t about stealing.””

“What was it about?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

Dad walked away from the table.

“I spent two years defending you.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“And I spent two years feeling like a stranger in my own home.””

Dad turned.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You spent two years making my daughter feel like a stranger.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Emma, tell him.””

I stepped back.

“Tell him what?””

“That I cared about you.””

I stared at her.

“When?””

Her face changed.

I continued.

“When did you care?””

“You’re being unfair.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“But I’m finally being honest.””

Rachel looked at me sadly.

“Emma…”

I wiped my eyes.

“I used to wait by the window when Dad traveled.””

Nobody spoke.

“I thought maybe you would change when he came home.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I thought you were only mean because you were stressed.””

Dad’s expression broke.

“But you weren’t stressed.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You just didn’t want me here.””

For once, she had no answer.

Dad picked up the folder again.

“I want the truth.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“You think the truth is going to make you feel better?””

“No.””

Dad looked at her.

“But it will make me stop guessing.””

She stared at him.

Then slowly smiled.

It wasn’t a kind smile.

It was the first time I saw the person behind the mask.

“You really want the truth?””

Dad said nothing.

Vanessa walked closer.

“You think you’re the victim because you found some papers?””

She pointed toward me.

“You have no idea what it’s like living with someone who reminds you every day that you weren’t the first choice.””

Dad’s face hardened.

“That’s your excuse?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“My excuse is that I got tired of waiting.””

“Waiting for what?””

Vanessa looked at the staircase.

“The house.””

The room went silent.

Dad stared at her.

“You planned this?””

“I planned for my future.””

“You planned to take my home?””

“I planned to protect myself.””

Rachel shook her head.

“That’s not protection.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“Do you know how much money this house is worth?””

Dad’s expression changed.

There it was.

The real reason.

Not family.

Not love.

Money.

He reached for his phone.

“I’m calling my attorney.””

Vanessa suddenly became nervous.

“No.””

Dad stopped.

“Why not?””

“Because there’s something you don’t know.””

I felt a chill.

Dad lowered the phone.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then at him.

“Your daughter wasn’t the only person I was trying to remove from this house.””

My heart dropped.

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa smiled slightly.

Then she reached into her purse and pulled out a small envelope.

“I think you should see who else signed these papers.””

Dad didn’t move.

“Who?””

Vanessa placed the envelope on the table.

And whispered:

“Your brother, Thomas.””

Dad froze.

Because Thomas had been dead for three years.

May you like

And somehow…

his signature was on the document.
