Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden For Twenty Years
Nobody spoke.
Richard Hale stood in the middle of the living room like a ghost from Dad’s past.
But ghosts weren’t supposed to look this confident.
Dad moved slightly in front of me.
“Get out.””
Richard smiled.
“Still protecting everyone except yourself.””
Dad’s expression hardened.
“You’re not welcome here.””
Richard looked around.
“Interesting.””
He walked slowly toward the fireplace.
“The house still looks exactly the same.””
Dad’s voice became colder.
“You broke into my home.””
“No.””
Richard glanced at Vanessa.
“She let me in.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That wasn’t part of the plan.””
Richard looked at her.
And the entire room changed.
Vanessa stopped talking.
Dad noticed.
“What plan?””
Richard ignored him.
“You were always impatient.””
Vanessa looked nervous.
“You said you would handle this.””
“I am handling it.””
Dad looked between them.
“You two know each other.””
Richard smiled.
“Of course.””
“How long?””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Dad.
“Long enough.””
Dad’s jaw tightened.
“You used my wife.””
Richard laughed.
“Your wife used herself.””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
Dad looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Richard walked toward the table.
“Daniel, you always believed everyone around you was loyal.””
He touched the property documents.
“That was your weakness.””
Dad stepped closer.
“My weakness?””
“Yes.””
Richard smiled.
“You trusted people because you thought they saw you the way you saw them.””
Dad stared at him.
“What do you want?””
Richard looked at the house.
“What was taken from me.””
“You lost a lawsuit.””
“I lost everything.””
“Because you cheated.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
For the first time, anger appeared.
“You still believe that story.””
Dad didn’t respond.
Richard pulled out an old envelope.
“I found this years ago.””
Dad looked at it.
“What is it?””
“The truth.””
Richard placed it on the table.
Dad didn’t touch it.
“Why now?””
“Because Thomas wanted you to know.””
Dad froze.
“What?””
Richard nodded.
“Your brother spent years trying to fix what happened.””
“That’s a lie.””
“No.””
Richard looked at me.
“Your uncle regretted what he did.””
Dad’s face changed.
“What did he do?””
Richard opened the envelope.
Inside were several old documents.
“Your father didn’t choose Daniel over Thomas.””
Dad looked confused.
“Then why did Thomas lose everything?””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
“Because someone made sure he believed he did.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“No.””
Dad turned toward her.
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“She never told you?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Richard.””
Dad looked at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard placed another paper on the table.
“Thomas didn’t contact Vanessa because he wanted revenge.””
Dad picked it up.
“He contacted her because he wanted help.””
“Help with what?””
Richard answered.
“Exposing the person who destroyed your family.””
Dad looked at Vanessa.
The silence was unbearable.
“Vanessa?””
She looked down.
Richard continued.
“She didn’t marry you because of the house.””
Dad waited.
“She married you because she needed access.””
My stomach turned.
Dad’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Access to what?””
Richard looked at the documents.
“Your father’s hidden company records.””
Dad shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Richard pointed toward Vanessa.
“She thought they were hidden somewhere in this house.””
Vanessa suddenly shouted:
“Stop!””
Everyone looked at her.
She was crying now.
Not fake tears.
Real fear.
Richard smiled.
“Finally.””
Dad stared at her.
“Is it true?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“You lied to me.””
“I was trying to protect myself.””
“You married me for information.””
“No!””
Her voice broke.
“I married you because I thought I could change things.””
Richard laughed.
“Don’t pretend you were innocent.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You promised me the documents would be enough.””
“And they would have been.””
Dad looked between them.
“What documents?””
Nobody answered.
Then a sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard creaked.
Everyone turned.
Dad immediately looked toward the staircase.
“Who else is here?””
Richard’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked surprised.
Vanessa whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Another step.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone was coming down.
Dad moved closer to me.
Then a voice came from the darkness above.
“Dad…”
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because that voice belonged to someone I knew.
Someone who was never supposed to be part of this secret.
