Chapter 9: The Choice Lily Made

I couldn’t stop thinking about one sentence.

*You would lose your family too.*

That was my father’s weapon.

Not money.

Not power.

Fear.

He didn’t have to threaten Lily directly.

He just convinced her that protecting me meant staying silent.

And somehow, she had spent years carrying that burden alone.

I left the house before anyone could stop me.

I drove without knowing where I was going.

Eventually, I ended up at a small coffee shop across town.

Somewhere anonymous.

Somewhere nobody knew my last name.

Miranda found me an hour later.

She sat across from me.

“You should eat something.””

I looked at the untouched coffee in front of me.

“I had a sister.””

“Yes.””

“She knew me.””

“Yes.””

“And everyone let me believe she never existed.””

Miranda didn’t try to comfort me with empty words.

She just listened.

That was exactly what I needed.

“I want to find her.””

Miranda nodded.

“I already started.””

My head lifted.

“What?””

“When I saw the documents, I contacted an old investigator who worked on the case.””

“And?””

“He found something.””

My heart raced.

“Where is she?””

Miranda placed a folder on the table.

“We don’t know yet.””

I opened it.

Inside were records.

Addresses.

Names.

Then I saw one.

A current address.

My hands shook.

“She’s alive?””

Miranda nodded slowly.

“Most likely.””

I stared at the page.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years of thinking I was the only child.

Fifteen years of believing a piece of my childhood had disappeared.

And she had been somewhere.

Living.

Waiting.

I looked at Miranda.

“Why didn’t she come back?””

Miranda was quiet.

“Maybe she thought she was protecting you.””

I closed the folder.

“No.””

My voice became firm.

“She deserves to know I never forgot her.””

Miranda studied me.

“Jenna, before you contact her, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“She left a statement before she disappeared.””

I froze.

“A statement?””

“Yes.””

“About my father?””

Miranda nodded.

“She said if anything happened to her, someone needed to tell you the truth.””

My hands tightened.

“What truth?””

Miranda looked around the coffee shop.

Then she lowered her voice.

“She said your father didn’t just take Claire Bennett’s house.””

I waited.

“He took something else.””

“What?””

Miranda opened the final page.

A handwritten sentence appeared.

*Robert Whitaker destroyed my mother’s life because she knew what he did before he became successful.*

I looked up.

“What did he do?””

Miranda shook her head.

“That’s the part Lily never explained.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Unknown number.

I stared at the screen.

A message appeared.

*Jenna?*

My heart stopped.

A second message followed.

*I don’t know if I’m ready to talk to you.*

My hands trembled.

Because I knew.

Only one person could have written those words.

A person I had spent fifteen years believing was gone.

Then the final message arrived.

*But you need to know why I left.*

I looked at Miranda.

She already knew.

“Answer it,” she whispered.

I pressed the screen.

May you like

And typed one word.

*Lily?*
