Chapter 15: The Person Who Helped Him

I spent the entire night staring at the ceiling.

Sleep was impossible.

Every time I closed my eyes, another piece of my life changed.

My father wasn’t the person I thought he was.

My sister wasn’t gone.

My mother wasn’t powerless.

And now there was someone else.

Someone who had helped him.

By morning, Lily was already awake.

She sat at the kitchen table reading through old documents.

“You didn’t sleep.””

Neither of us needed to ask.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Me neither.””

For years, we had both been alone with the same pain.

Now we were finally sharing it.

Miranda arrived at nine.

She placed a folder on the table.

“The attorney’s name is Daniel Cross.””

I looked at the papers.

“Why would he help my father?””

Miranda opened the file.

“Because he benefited.””

“How?””

“Your father promised him a percentage of the property sale.””

My stomach tightened.

“So it was planned.””

“Yes.””

Lily looked at the documents.

“Dad didn’t just take the house.””

Miranda shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He built a system.””

I flipped through the pages.

Contracts.

Payments.

False statements.

Everything connected.

Then I saw my mother’s name.

“Why was Mom involved?””

Miranda’s expression softened.

“That’s the part we still don’t know.””

I looked at Lily.

“She knew.””

Lily nodded.

“But knowing something and being able to stop it are different.””

I thought about my mother.

The woman who spent my childhood telling me everything was fine.

The woman who always looked tired.

The woman who apologized for things she never explained.

Maybe she wasn’t hiding because she didn’t care.

Maybe she was hiding because she was trapped.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Ryan.

*I found something in Dad’s office.*

I replied:

*What?*

The response came quickly.

*A letter from Mom.*

My heart stopped.

*What does it say?*

Three dots appeared.

Then:

*She knew Dad was going to betray her.*

I looked at Miranda.

“Ryan found something.””

Minutes later, my brother arrived.

He looked exhausted.

But determined.

He placed an envelope on the table.

“This was hidden behind a drawer.””

My mother’s handwriting was on the front.

*To Jenna.*

I stared.

Another letter.

Another secret.

I opened it carefully.

The first sentence made my eyes fill with tears.

*My sweet Jenna, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you from the truth.*

I kept reading.

*Your father will tell you he did everything for family. He will say he made sacrifices. But the truth is, he sacrificed everyone else to protect himself.*

I covered my mouth.

My mother had known.

She had written this before everything fell apart.

The letter continued.

*There is one thing I need you to understand. The house was never the most important thing. The house was proof.*

I looked up.

“Proof of what?””

Ryan leaned closer.

We read the final paragraph together.

*The night Lily disappeared, she found evidence that your father was not only stealing property. He was hiding another crime.*

The room went cold.

Another crime.

Not just the house.

Not just Claire.

Not just Lily.

My mother’s final sentence made my hands shake.

*Jenna, your father’s biggest secret is not what he took.*

A pause.

May you like

Then:

*It is what he did to make sure nobody could take it back.*
