Chapter 12: The Ownership Lie
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Not me.
Not Lily.
Not Miranda.
Even the noise from the park seemed to disappear.
“My mother?””
Miranda answered carefully.
“Yes.””
I looked at Lily.
She looked just as shocked.
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too,” Miranda said.
“Until I found the original documents.””
I stood up from the bench.
“Where?””
“In the county archive.””
“What do they say?””
Miranda hesitated.
“Your mother purchased the property years before she married your father.””
I felt dizzy.
“My mother owned this house?””
“Yes.””
Lily looked at me.
“Then Dad didn’t steal Claire’s house.””
I swallowed.
“No.””
I looked around the park.
“He stole my mother’s.””
The pieces started moving.
The strange fear.
The secrets.
The way my parents reacted when I opened that room.
My father hadn’t just hidden Lily’s story.
He had hidden my mother’s too.
I ended the call.
Lily watched me.
“Jenna.””
I looked at her.
“Did you know?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Did Dad ever mention Mom owned the property?””
“Never.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful, empty laugh.
“He built his entire life around pretending he created everything.””
Lily looked down.
“That’s what he does.””
We sat again.
I needed answers.
Not guesses.
Not theories.
Answers.
“Tell me about Mom.””
Lily looked surprised.
“Your mom?””
“Yes.””
She was quiet for a moment.
“She loved you.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“She did?””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
“Then why did she let this happen?””
Lily’s expression softened.
“Because Dad convinced her she had no choice.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“He told her if she challenged him, he would take you away.””
My heart broke.
Again.
My father had built his control around fear.
Everyone in my family had been trapped by the same person.
Lily reached into her bag again.
“This is why I disappeared.””
She handed me another envelope.
Inside was a legal document.
I recognized my father’s signature.
“What is this?””
“A confession.””
I looked at her.
“From Dad?””
“No.””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“From someone who worked with him.””
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
My hands started shaking.
The document described financial manipulation.
Fake transfers.
False contracts.
But the final page was the worst.
A witness statement.
A name at the bottom.
My mother.
“She knew?””
Lily nodded.
“She found out after I did.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she thought she was protecting you.””
I closed my eyes.
Everyone had protected me.
And somehow, everyone had hurt me.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Ryan.
*Dad knows you found Lily.*
I stared.
A second message arrived.
*He left the house.*
Then:
*Jenna, I think he’s going after the evidence.*
My stomach dropped.
I showed Lily.
Her face changed immediately.
“He knows about the letters.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means he knows what they prove.””
I stood.
“We need to get back.””
Lily grabbed my arm.
“Jenna.””
I looked at her.
She looked terrified.
“Before we go…”
“What?””
She swallowed.
“There’s one thing I never told anyone.””
The wind moved through the trees.
The park suddenly felt colder.
“What?””
She looked directly at me.
“The night I left…”
She paused.
“I didn’t leave because I was afraid of Dad.””
I frowned.
“Then why?””
Her voice dropped.
“Because I saw him bury something under the house.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
May you like
Lily held my gaze.
“And I think he just realized you’re about to find it.””
