Chapter 8: What The Basement Revealed

The police sirens outside were the first sign that my life had officially changed.

Not because I called them.

Because Miranda did.

She told me she didn’t want me opening anything alone.

Especially after discovering the old case connected to the property.

My parents sat in the living room while officers waited outside.

Ryan stood near the window, looking like he had aged ten years overnight.

Nobody spoke.

The house felt like it was holding its breath.

Finally, Miranda arrived.

She walked directly toward me.

“Are you okay?””

I nodded.

But I wasn’t.

I don’t think anyone would be.

Yesterday, I was a woman celebrating her first home.

Today, I was standing inside a house connected to my missing sister.

Miranda looked toward my father.

“Mr. Whitaker, we need to ask you some questions.””

My father stood.

“I already told you this is a misunderstanding.””

Miranda didn’t react.

“Then you’ll have no problem explaining everything.””

The basement door was opened with an old key my father kept hidden in his office drawer.

That detail alone destroyed any argument that he had forgotten about it.

Inside was a small room.

Dust covered everything.

A desk.

Filing cabinets.

Old boxes.

My father stepped back.

“This isn’t what you think.””

I looked at him.

“Then tell me what it is.””

He said nothing.

An officer opened the first cabinet.

Inside were property documents.

Photos.

Letters.

My heart started racing.

Then they found Claire Bennett’s name.

The officer looked at Miranda.

“This is connected to the previous owner?””

Miranda nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at my father.

“Why did you have her records?””

He stayed quiet.

My mother whispered:

“Because he was trying to help.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She immediately looked terrified.

“Help who?””

I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

She covered her face.

“He said Claire was making bad decisions.””

I stared.

“So he took her house?””

“No.””

My father finally spoke.

“She was in trouble.””

“Then why didn’t you help her?””

His expression changed.

“Because she wouldn’t listen.””

I looked at the files.

“Or because she found out something?””

The silence that followed was enough.

The officer opened another folder.

Inside were medical records.

A photograph.

And a handwritten note.

He looked at me.

“Jenna, you should see this.””

I walked closer.

The photograph showed Lily.

Older than I remembered.

Maybe sixteen.

Standing in front of this house.

Beside her was Claire.

And beside them…

Was my father.

But what shocked me wasn’t the picture.

It was the date.

It had been taken two years after my parents claimed Lily disappeared.

My knees almost gave out.

“No.””

My mother started crying.

“Jenna…”

I looked at her.

“You told me she was gone.””

“She was.””

“Then explain this.””

Nobody could.

The officer carefully placed the photo on the table.

“There’s something else.””

He handed Miranda another document.

She read it.

Then looked at me.

“Jenna.””

“What?””

Her expression changed.

“This isn’t a disappearance report.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Miranda looked at my father.

“This says Lily left voluntarily.””

I stared.

“But why?””

My father looked down.

And finally, after all these years, he said something I never expected.

“She found out the truth.””

My voice shook.

“What truth?””

He swallowed.

“The house wasn’t the only thing Claire lost.””

The room went silent.

My father looked at the photograph.

“Claire discovered I had changed documents before the sale.””

I froze.

“You forged paperwork?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

My entire body felt numb.

Miranda stepped closer.

“Why would Lily leave instead of exposing you?””

My father looked at me.

And his answer destroyed everything I thought I knew about my family.

“Because I made her believe that if she told anyone…”

May you like

He paused.

“…you would lose your family too.””
