Chapter 13: What Was Buried Beneath The House

The drive back home felt like the longest drive of my life.

Lily sat beside me in silence.

Not awkward silence.

The kind of silence shared by two people who had just realized their entire childhood was built on a lie.

Every few minutes, I glanced at her.

I still couldn’t believe she was real.

Fifteen years ago, I lost a sister.

Today, I got her back.

And now we were driving toward the house that had taken her away.

When we turned onto my street, I immediately knew something was wrong.

The front door was open.

My heart dropped.

I parked before the car fully stopped.

“Stay here,” I told Lily.

She shook her head.

“No.””

“You don’t know what he’ll do.””

She looked at me.

“Neither do you.””

And somehow, that was enough.

We walked inside together.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

“Ryan?””

No answer.

I moved through the living room.

Boxes were scattered across the floor.

Drawers had been pulled open.

Someone had been searching.

Not looking.

Searching.

Lily walked toward the basement door.

“He came here.””

I followed her.

“How do you know?””

She pointed.

A fresh scratch marked the lock.

“He knows exactly where to look.””

I felt a chill.

“Then we find it first.””

We opened the basement door.

The smell hit me immediately.

Dust.

Old wood.

Something damp.

The room looked different than before.

One of the cabinets had been moved.

Behind it was a section of wall with newer paint.

Lily froze.

“That wasn’t there before.””

I walked closer.

A small gap ran along the edge.

Someone had covered it.

Hidden it.

I touched the wall.

“This is it.””

We pulled the cabinet away together.

Behind it was a metal door.

Not a normal basement door.

A safe.

Built into the wall.

My hands went cold.

“He hid something here.””

Lily nodded.

“Something he never wanted anyone to find.””

I tried the handle.

Locked.

Then I noticed something.

A small key taped underneath the cabinet.

I stared at it.

“He knew.””

Lily looked confused.

“What?””

“He knew someone might find this.””

I pulled the key free.

It fit perfectly.

The safe opened with a heavy click.

Inside were three things.

A folder.

A small video camera.

And a letter.

My name was written on the envelope.

Again.

I didn’t open the letter.

Not yet.

I opened the folder first.

The first document was a property transfer.

The second was a bank record.

The third made my breath stop.

A confession.

Signed by my father.

But it wasn’t addressed to a lawyer.

It was addressed to my mother.

*I know what I did was wrong. I know Claire will never forgive me. But I cannot lose Jenna.*

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

“He knew.””

Lily stepped closer.

“What?””

“He knew he was wrong.””

I flipped the page.

The confession continued.

*I thought taking control of the property would secure our future. I convinced myself it was necessary. But when Lily discovered the truth, everything fell apart.*

My hands shook.

There was more.

*I threatened Lily because I was afraid. I told myself I was protecting my family, but I was only protecting myself.*

Lily covered her mouth.

“He admitted it.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the camera.

“He recorded this?””

“No.””

Lily picked it up.

“He was recording something else.””

The battery was dead.

But the memory card was still inside.

I grabbed my phone adapter from my bag.

A single video file appeared.

Created fifteen years ago.

The title was simple.

*Lily.*

My sister and I looked at each other.

Then I pressed play.

The screen showed my father sitting in this basement.

He looked younger.

But his expression was the same.

Cold.

Controlled.

Then Lily appeared on camera.

Sixteen years old.

Angry.

Terrified.

“Tell the truth,” young Lily said.

My father looked away.

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I understand everything.””

The recording shook.

Someone was holding the camera.

Lily.

My sister’s voice cracked.

“You stole from Claire.””

My father stood.

“Lower your voice.””

“You lied to Mom.””

“Lily.””

“And now you’re threatening me.””

The video suddenly paused.

The file ended.

Only half the recording.

Lily stared at the screen.

“There’s more.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I remember.””

She looked toward the dark basement.

“I remember what happened next.””

Before she could continue, footsteps sounded upstairs.

Someone was inside the house.

Lily grabbed my arm.

“Jenna.””

I turned off the phone.

The basement door slowly opened.

May you like

And my father’s voice came from the stairs.

“You should have left the past buried.””
