Chapter 11: The Truth Lily Carried

The park looked smaller than I remembered.

That was the first thing I noticed.

When I was little, Westbridge Park felt endless.

The trees seemed taller.

The walking paths seemed longer.

The world seemed safer.

Now, I stood near the old fountain waiting for someone who had existed only in memories.

At exactly 7 PM, I saw her.

I knew immediately.

Not because she looked exactly the same.

She didn’t.

Fifteen years changed people.

But her eyes were the same.

The same eyes from the girl in the photograph.

The same eyes from my forgotten memories.

She stopped several feet away.

Neither of us moved.

Finally, she whispered:

“Jenna.””

My throat tightened.

“Lily.””

The name felt strange.

And familiar.

She smiled sadly.

“You still remember.””

I almost laughed.

“I spent years thinking I imagined you.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you forgot me.””

I stepped closer.

“Never.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she hugged me.

And I realized something painful.

I had spent fifteen years missing someone I didn’t even know I missed.

We sat on a bench for nearly two hours.

Lily told me everything.

Not all at once.

Not dramatically.

Just pieces.

The way people tell stories they have carried alone for too long.

“When I found out about Dad, I was sixteen.””

I looked at her.

“What did you find?””

She stared at the ground.

“Proof that he had manipulated the property transfer.””

My heart tightened.

“Claire’s house.””

She nodded.

“Mom trusted him.””

“What happened?””

Lily took a deep breath.

“Dad convinced her he was helping. He told her he knew investors. He said he could save the house.””

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

Her voice became quiet.

“He wanted it.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because the property was valuable. But that wasn’t the worst part.””

I waited.

“The worst part was what happened afterward.””

She looked at me.

“Mom found out. She threatened to expose him.””

“And?””

“He destroyed her reputation.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

“Everyone believed she was unstable. They said she couldn’t manage money. They said she was making false accusations.””

I remembered Miranda’s words.

“He took something else.””

Lily nodded.

“He took her credibility.””

The anger inside me burned.

“And you tried to tell people?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

She looked away.

“Dad found out.””

The silence was heavy.

“He told me if I went public, he would make sure Mom went to prison.””

I felt my hands curl into fists.

“He threatened you.””

“He controlled me.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was sixteen, Jenna.””

I reached for her hand.

“I’m sorry.””

She squeezed my fingers.

“You don’t have to apologize.””

“I do.””

“No.””

She looked directly at me.

“You were a child too.””

That hurt.

Because I had spent years blaming myself for something I never understood.

Lily reached into her bag.

“I brought something.””

She handed me a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

“What is this?””

“Something I kept because I didn’t know if I would ever see you.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

From Lily.

But not to me.

To my father.

The first line made my blood run cold.

*Robert, if anything happens to me, Jenna needs to know you knew the truth before you bought that house.*

I looked at Lily.

“What did he know?””

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“He knew Claire wasn’t the only person he hurt.””

I looked at the letter.

“Who else?””

Lily’s expression changed.

And before she answered, my phone started ringing.

Miranda.

I picked up.

“Jenna, where are you?””

“With Lily.””

A pause.

Then Miranda’s voice dropped.

“Listen carefully.””

“What?””

“I found another record.””

My stomach tightened.

“What record?””

“The original property agreement.””

I looked at Lily.

Miranda continued.

“And Jenna…”

Her voice became almost a whisper.

“The house was never supposed to belong to your father.””

I froze.

“Then who did it belong to?””

A long pause.

May you like

Then:

“It belonged to your mother.””
