Chapter 14: My Father’s Last Lie

My father stood at the top of the basement stairs.

For a moment, nobody moved.

He looked different.

Not older.

Smaller.

Like the person who controlled everyone for decades had finally realized control was slipping away.

His eyes moved to Lily.

And all the emotion disappeared.

“You.””

Lily stepped back.

“Hello, Dad.””

The word sounded strange coming from her.

Not loving.

Not angry.

Just empty.

My father looked at the safe.

Then at the documents in my hand.

“You opened it.””

I held up the confession.

“You wrote this.””

His face changed.

“Jenna, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“I listened my entire life.””

He stepped closer.

“I can explain.””

“You always explain.””

I walked up the stairs.

“You explain why Ryan needs help.””

“You explain why Mom has to sacrifice.””

“You explain why Lily disappeared.””

His expression tightened.

“Lily left.””

Lily laughed bitterly.

“You’re still doing that?””

My father looked at her.

“You made your choice.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You made it for me.””

The room became silent.

I looked between them.

“How many years did you think you could keep this hidden?””

My father looked at me.

“As long as necessary.””

That answer hurt more than anger.

Because he wasn’t denying it.

He was admitting it.

“You knew she was alive.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

My stomach turned.

“You knew?””

My father looked down.

“I searched for her.””

Lily stared.

“After you forced me away?””

“I never forced you.””

“You threatened me.””

“I was scared.””

The confession came so quietly that it almost sounded human.

Almost.

But then he ruined it.

“You were going to destroy everything.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were afraid everyone would finally see you.””

His silence confirmed it.

Ryan appeared in the doorway.

He must have heard everything.

“Dad.””

My father turned.

“Go upstairs.””

Ryan didn’t move.

“No.””

My father stared at him.

“I said go.””

For the first time, Ryan ignored him.

“You lied to me too.””

My father looked frustrated.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Ryan laughed.

“From what?””

Silence.

“From knowing you hurt people?””

My father looked away.

And I realized something.

Ryan wasn’t defending him anymore.

The golden child had finally seen the truth.

Miranda arrived twenty minutes later with officers.

My father didn’t fight.

He didn’t run.

He simply sat at the kitchen table.

Like someone who had spent years preparing for this moment.

Before leaving, he looked at me.

“Jenna.””

I stopped.

“I did everything for my family.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

His eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“You did everything to keep control.””

He looked hurt.

But I didn’t feel guilty.

Not anymore.

Later that night, Lily and I sat in the living room.

The house was finally quiet.

No lies.

No pretending.

Just silence.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“For what?””

“For not finding you sooner.””

Her expression softened.

“You were a kid.””

“I still feel like I failed you.””

She shook her head.

“You were the only person I never blamed.””

I looked down.

“Why?””

“Because I knew you.””

She smiled sadly.

“You were the little girl who cried when I had to go home after babysitting you.””

I laughed through tears.

“I remember that.””

“Do you remember the rabbit?””

I smiled.

“The stuffed rabbit.””

“The one with the missing eye.””

I nodded.

For the first time in years, a happy memory didn’t hurt.

Then Lily reached into her bag.

“There’s something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She handed me a small envelope.

“I kept this because I didn’t know what Dad would do.””

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of a document.

My mother’s signature.

And one sentence highlighted.

*I transfer ownership of the property to Jenna Whitaker upon my death.*

I stared.

“What is this?””

Lily looked at me.

“Your mother knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Dad would try to take everything.””

My hands trembled.

“My mother planned this?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the document.

Then at Lily.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Lily’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because she wasn’t waiting for you to discover the truth.””

She paused.

“She was waiting for you to be strong enough to survive it.””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Miranda.

I picked up.

“Jenna.””

Her voice sounded urgent.

“What happened?””

“I found something else in your father’s files.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father didn’t act alone.””

I looked at Lily.

“What do you mean?””

Miranda lowered her voice.

“There was another person involved.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

The answer came.

May you like

And it was someone I never expected.

“Your mother’s attorney.””
