Chapter 9: The Last Person I Trusted
The courtroom waited.
Even Marcus looked nervous.
For the first time since this nightmare began, he didn’t have an answer ready.
The judge repeated the question.
“Who were you speaking to in this recording?””
Marcus’s attorney stood.
“Your Honor, we object to this line of questioning.””
The judge looked at him.
“On what grounds?””
The attorney hesitated.
The silence grew heavier.
Rebecca looked at me.
She knew.
Something was coming.
Then Marcus spoke.
“It doesn’t matter.””
Everyone turned toward him.
His voice was low.
“It was just a conversation.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“It matters because the person in that conversation helped you create this plan.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You don’t know that.””
Rebecca smiled.
“Yes, we do.””
She turned toward the evidence.
“We have the metadata.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“The recording was made on a device registered to someone else.””
The judge looked interested.
“Whose device?””
Rebecca picked up a paper.
“Daniel Carter’s.””
My heart dropped.
Daniel.
I turned toward him.
He looked devastated.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Devastated.
The room became a blur.
“No,” I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
“Aaliyah…”
I shook my head.
“Please don’t.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I can explain.””
Those words again.
I felt anger rising.
“Everyone always has an explanation.””
The judge looked between us.
“Mr. Carter, do you have anything to say?””
Daniel slowly stood.
“Yes.””
His voice was shaking.
“I recorded that conversation.””
Marcus stared at him.
“You traitor.””
Daniel looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“You were my sister’s husband. You were family.””
He swallowed.
“But I realized too late that you never saw her as family.””
The courtroom was silent.
Daniel continued.
“When I found out what he was planning, I tried to stop him.””
I stared.
“You recorded him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His face fell.
“Because I was ashamed.””
The answer hurt.
More than I expected.
“You let me believe everyone was against me.””
“I know.””
“You watched me struggle.””
“I know.””
His voice broke.
“I thought I could fix it before you ever found out.””
I looked away.
Because part of me understood.
And that made it harder.
Betrayal wasn’t always done by people who hated you.
Sometimes it was done by people who were too weak to stand beside you.
The judge reviewed the evidence.
Then looked at Marcus.
“Mr. Carter, based on the information presented today, this court finds serious concerns regarding your intentions.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“This is all because she owns a house.””
Rebecca immediately responded.
“No.””
She placed the documents down.
“This is because he attempted fraud, manipulation, and used his child as a weapon.””
Marcus looked at me.
And for a moment, I saw something familiar.
The man I married.
The man who used to hold my hand.
Then he disappeared again.
“I loved you.””
The courtroom went silent.
I stared at him.
“You loved what I could give you.””
His face changed.
“That’s not true.””
I shook my head.
“If you loved me, you wouldn’t have spent years planning how to destroy me.””
He looked away.
That was the first honest reaction I had seen from him.
The judge continued.
“Temporary custody will remain with Mrs. Carter.””
I exhaled.
A weight I had carried for weeks finally lifted.
But the judge wasn’t finished.
“There will also be an investigation into the alleged document fraud.””
Marcus’s face changed.
Panic.
Real panic.
After court ended, Daniel approached me.
I stopped walking.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“I mean it.””
“I know.””
I looked at him.
“Then why are you still here?””
His eyes were red.
“Because I spent months helping someone hurt you.””
A pause.
“And I need to spend the rest of my life proving I’m not that person.””
I didn’t answer.
Not because I accepted his apology.
Because forgiveness wasn’t something someone could demand.
It was something earned.
That night, I returned home with Lily.
My home.
For the first time in weeks, it felt like mine again.
I sat on the floor beside her crib.
She grabbed my finger.
And I smiled.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Is this Aaliyah Carter?””
“Yes.””
“I’m calling about Marcus Carter.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who are you?””
“My name is Claire.””
Silence.
Then:
“I used to work with Marcus.””
I stood slowly.
“What do you want?””
Her voice lowered.
“I think you deserve to know the truth.””
“What truth?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“Marcus wasn’t trying to take your house because he wanted money.””
I frowned.
“Then why?””
Her next words made my blood run cold.
“Because your house was never the real target.””
I looked around the room.
At the walls.
At the life I built.
“Then what was?””
The woman answered quietly:
“Your father’s inheritance.””
I froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I felt my heartbeat change.
Because there was one thing I had never told Marcus.
One thing almost nobody knew.
My father left me something years ago.
Something valuable.
Something hidden.
Something I had never touched.
Claire continued:
“And Marcus found out about it before your wedding.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“How?””
A long silence.
Then she whispered:
“Because someone in your family told him.””
I closed my eyes.
Another betrayal.
Another secret.

And this time…
I knew exactly who it was.
