Proud

Chapter 5: The Price Of Loyalty

Daniel didn’t say anything.

He didn’t deny it.

He didn’t defend himself.

He just sat there.

Silent.

And that silence told me more than any confession could.

“Daniel.””

My voice sounded strange.

Almost like I was talking to a stranger.

“Why is your signature on the transfer request?””

He looked down.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not this time.””

He looked at me.

“Aaliyah—”

“Every time someone betrays me, they say the same thing.””

I pointed toward the documents.

“They always have an explanation.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I never wanted you to lose the house.””

“But you helped someone try to take it.””

He closed his eyes.

“I was trying to help Marcus get what he thought he deserved.””

I stared at him.

“What he deserved?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“He told me he paid for repairs. He told me he helped build a life there.””

I laughed.

A cold, painful laugh.

“He painted a bedroom wall.””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“That’s the problem.””

I stepped closer.

“You made decisions about my life without knowing the truth.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

My answer came immediately.

“You were.””

The room was quiet.

Then Daniel whispered:

“He threatened me.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked up.

“Marcus threatened me.””

I didn’t understand.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel leaned back.

“When he first came to me, he wasn’t asking for help.””

“Then what was he doing?””

“He was warning me.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“About what?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

“He showed me something.””

He opened a folder.

Then handed me the phone.

There were pictures.

Messages.

Documents.

My eyes moved across the screen.

And slowly, everything started making sense.

Marcus hadn’t just planned to leave me.

He had planned to destroy my reputation first.

The messages were between Marcus and Vanessa.

They weren’t romantic.

They were strategic.

*Once Aaliyah looks unstable, the custody situation changes.*

My hands tightened around the phone.

Another message.

*Her brother will help. He thinks he’s protecting the family.*

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew about this?””

His face crumbled.

“Not everything.””

“Enough.””

He looked away.

“I knew Marcus wanted custody of Lily.””

My heart sank.

That was the part that hurt most.

Not the house.

Not the money.

My daughter.

“He wanted to take my baby?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“He said you weren’t mentally prepared to be a mother.””

I stared at him.

The woman who stayed awake every night.

The woman who learned every cry.

The woman who held Lily through fevers.

Marcus wanted people to believe I couldn’t care for my own child.

I felt something inside me turn from pain into determination.

“Where is he?””

Daniel looked confused.

“Who?””

“Marcus.””

“I don’t know.””

I picked up my phone.

Because suddenly, I wasn’t thinking like a hurt wife.

I was thinking like a mother.

Rebecca answered before the first ring ended.

“Aaliyah?””

“I need you to help me with something.””

“What happened?””

“Marcus is trying to take custody of Lily.””

There was silence.

Then Rebecca’s voice became firm.

“Send me everything.””

I looked at Daniel.

He stood slowly.

“I’ll help.””

I stared at him.

“I don’t know if I can trust you.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“But I’m going to fix what I broke.””

I didn’t answer.

Because trust wasn’t rebuilt with words.

It was rebuilt with actions.

That night, after Daniel left, I sat beside Lily’s crib.

The house was quiet.

For the first time in months, there was no pretending.

No pretending Marcus was working late.

No pretending everything was fine.

No pretending love could survive betrayal.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Marcus.

*You should have taken the divorce papers.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message came.

*Now you’re going to lose everything.*

I typed a reply.

Then deleted it.

Because I knew something Marcus didn’t.

He thought this was about winning.

He thought this was about a house.

But he had forgotten one thing.

I spent years building this life before him.

And I knew exactly how to rebuild it without him.

Then another message appeared.

This one wasn’t from Marcus.

It was from an unknown number.

*Aaliyah, you don’t know the whole story about your husband.*

I stared.

Another message appeared.

*He didn’t start planning this six months ago.*

My heartbeat increased.

May you like

Then the final message arrived.

*He started planning it the day he married you.*
