Chapter 4: The Person Who Knew Everything
“Who helped you prepare those papers?”” I asked again.
The silence on the other end of the phone felt deliberate.
Marcus wanted me to suffer through the answer.
He wanted me to imagine every possible person.
But I already knew.
I knew before he even said the name.
“Your brother.””
My fingers went numb.
The room suddenly felt too quiet.
I looked at Rebecca.
She was staring at me, waiting.
“What did he say?”” she whispered.
I slowly lowered the phone.
“Daniel.””
Rebecca’s expression changed.
“No.””
I nodded.
“Marcus said Daniel helped him.””
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
My brother.
The person who helped me choose this house.
The person who stood beside me when I signed the mortgage papers.
The person who told me he was proud of me for building something on my own.
Daniel knew everything.
He knew how much I had saved.
He knew the exact amount I paid.
He knew where I kept the original documents.
He knew the security questions on my accounts because I trusted him enough to help me organize everything.
Rebecca leaned forward.
“Aaliyah, think carefully. Did Daniel ever have access to your documents?””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After Lily was born.””
Rebecca’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
I looked down.
“Because I was exhausted.””
The memory came back.
Three months earlier.
I was sitting on the bedroom floor, crying because I couldn’t find a copy of my insurance paperwork.
Lily was screaming.
Marcus was at work.
Daniel had come over with groceries.
He looked at me and said:
“You need help. You can’t carry everything alone.””
And I believed him.
I handed him a box of documents.
A box containing pieces of my entire life.
“I’m such an idiot,” I whispered.
Rebecca shook her head.
“No. You trusted family. That’s different.””
I looked at the screen showing the fake signature.
“But someone used that trust against me.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel.
*Can we talk? Alone. Please.*
I stared at the words.
Rebecca noticed.
“Are you going to answer?””
I didn’t know.
Part of me wanted to call him and demand the truth.
Another part of me was afraid.
Because once someone breaks your trust, the hardest part isn’t discovering the betrayal.
It’s realizing how many moments were fake.
I typed back.
*Come to my attorney’s office.*
His response came immediately.
*No. Not there. Home. Like family.*
I laughed bitterly.
Home.
That word meant something different now.
I looked at Rebecca.
“I’ll meet him.””
She frowned.
“Alone?””
“No.””
I looked at Lily sleeping peacefully in her carrier.
“I’m done being alone when people make plans against me.””
An hour later, Daniel walked into my house.
The same house he helped me buy.
The same house where we celebrated holidays.
The same house where he hugged me after Lily was born.
But that day, he didn’t look like my brother.
He looked like someone who had been caught.
His eyes moved across the room.
Then stopped on the empty space where Marcus’s things used to be.
“You kicked him out.””
I crossed my arms.
“Yes.””
Daniel sighed.
“Aaliyah, you don’t understand what happened.””
I almost smiled.
“Then explain it.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was my answer.
“Did you help him?””
Daniel looked away.
“Not exactly.””
I felt something break inside me.
Not because he denied it.
Because he was still trying to avoid saying the truth.
“What does ‘not exactly’ mean?””
He walked toward the table.
“Aaliyah, Marcus came to me months ago.””
“Months?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“How long?””
He hesitated.
“Six months.””
Six months.
Before Lily was born.
Before I became exhausted.
Before everything changed.
“What did he tell you?””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“He said you two were having problems.””
“And you believed him?””
“I thought I was helping save your marriage.””
I laughed quietly.
“You helped him steal my house.””
His eyes filled with guilt.
“I didn’t know he would do this.””
“Then why did you help him?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because he told me you planned to leave him.””
My anger stopped for a second.
“What?””
“He said you were preparing to divorce him after the baby was born.””
I stared at him.
“That’s a lie.””
“I know that now.””
“No, Daniel.””
My voice became colder.
“You should have known then.””
He flinched.
I walked closer.
“You know me better than anyone.””
“I thought I did.””
That sentence hurt more than anything else.
Because it sounded true.
Daniel wasn’t just apologizing.
He was admitting that he didn’t know me anymore.
“What exactly did you give him?””
His face changed.
“Aaliyah…”
“What did you give him?””
He sat down slowly.
“The documents.””
My chest tightened.
“Which ones?””
“The property papers. Your financial records. The copies of your signatures.””
I stared at him.
“You gave him my signatures?””
“I thought they were just for him to review.””
“You thought?””
Daniel covered his face.
“I made a mistake.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He looked up.
“A mistake is forgetting someone’s birthday.””
I pointed toward the door.
“You gave my husband the tools to destroy me.””
Daniel looked like he wanted to cry.
“I’m sorry.””
But the word felt empty.
Because sorry didn’t erase months of planning.
Sorry didn’t undo betrayal.
My phone rang.
Rebecca.
I answered.
“What happened?””
Her voice was serious.
“Aaliyah, I found something.””
“What?””
“There’s a second filing.””
My stomach dropped.
“What second filing?””
“A request to transfer ownership.””
I looked at Daniel.
He immediately looked away.
Rebecca continued.
“And Aaliyah…”
“What?””
“The transfer wasn’t just signed by Marcus.””
My heart stopped.
“Whose signature was the second one?””
There was a pause.
Then Rebecca said:
“Your brother’s.””
I slowly turned toward Daniel.
His face went pale.
May you like
And for the first time…
I wondered if Marcus had not been the only person who betrayed me.
