Chapter 7: The Evidence He Never Expected

The words echoed in my head.

“He’s trying to prove that everything you own was actually built with money that belongs to him.””

I stood frozen in the middle of the coffee shop.

For a moment, I couldn’t process it.

Not because it was complicated.

Because it was cruel.

Marcus wasn’t just trying to take my house.

He was trying to rewrite history.

He wanted to convince everyone that the life I built before him was somehow his.

Vanessa looked at me.

“What did she say?””

I grabbed the folder from the table.

“I have to go.””

She stood.

“Aaliyah, wait.””

I stopped.

She looked down.

“I know you hate me.””

I said nothing.

“Maybe you should.””

Her voice cracked.

“But I need you to know something.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“I didn’t know who he really was.””

I almost responded.

Almost.

But I remembered something.

A person could be fooled.

A person could make a mistake.

But a person could also choose what to do after learning the truth.

Vanessa had chosen to help me.

That mattered.

“Keep the folder,” I said.

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“If Marcus asks for it, don’t give it to him.””

She nodded.

“I won’t.””

When I arrived at Rebecca’s office, she was already waiting.

The moment I walked in, she placed a thick file on the desk.

“This is what Marcus filed.””

I opened it.

The first page made my stomach turn.

*Petition for equitable ownership and financial reimbursement.*

I looked up.

“He’s claiming my house belongs to him.””

“Not exactly.””

Rebecca pointed at the paperwork.

“He’s claiming that your personal assets were improved through marital contributions.””

I flipped through the pages.

“He paid for renovations?””

“That’s what he says.””

I looked at the numbers.

A few thousand dollars.

Paint.

Furniture.

Minor repairs.

I looked at Rebecca.

“That’s it?””

“That’s it.””

I laughed.

A tired, disbelieving laugh.

“He thinks buying a couch makes him the owner?””

“He thinks he can convince a judge that the property became a shared asset.””

I looked back at the papers.

Then I saw something.

A bank statement.

My eyes narrowed.

“Where did this come from?””

Rebecca looked serious.

“That’s the problem.””

The statement showed a transfer.

A large one.

Money deposited into an account connected to Marcus.

The description:

*Property contribution.*

I felt cold.

“He forged this too?””

“We’re investigating.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“This isn’t random.””

Rebecca watched me.

“What do you mean?””

“Marcus knew exactly what he was doing.””

I pointed at the document.

“He needed a story.””

“A story?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the paperwork.

“He needed evidence that he invested in the house.””

Rebecca nodded slowly.

“And?””

“And if he couldn’t create real evidence…”

I stopped.

Because I knew.

“He created fake evidence.””

Rebecca leaned back.

“Aaliyah, if that’s true, we need proof.””

I looked at my phone.

There was one person who might have proof.

Daniel.

I hated that thought.

But I needed answers.

I called him.

He answered immediately.

“Aaliyah?””

“I need your help.””

A pause.

“Okay.””

I didn’t expect that.

No excuses.

No questions.

Just okay.

“Marcus created fake documents.””

Daniel became quiet.

“What?””

“You helped him access my records.””

His voice broke.

“I know.””

“Then help me understand how he did it.””

Daniel breathed heavily.

“I need to tell you something.””

I closed my eyes.

“What?””

“When Marcus came to me, he already had a plan.””

“Tell me.””

“He had folders.””

“What kind of folders?””

“Information about you.””

I gripped the phone.

“How much information?””

“Everything.””

The room felt colder.

Daniel continued.

“He knew your salary. Your savings. Your house value. Even your insurance.””

“How?””

“He said he had been preparing.””

I felt sick.

“Preparing for what?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

“Taking control.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She was listening carefully.

“Daniel, where did he keep those files?””

“I don’t know.””

“Think.””

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“There was a storage unit.””

My heart stopped.

“A storage unit?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

Another pause.

“But I remember the address because I drove him there once.””

I grabbed a pen.

“Tell me.””

Twenty minutes later, Rebecca and I were standing outside a small storage facility.

The manager looked through his records.

“Are you sure about this?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He typed something into his computer.

Then his expression changed.

“You’re the owner?””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Of what?””

He looked at the screen.

“The unit.””

I froze.

“No.””

He turned the monitor toward me.

The name on the account wasn’t Marcus.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It was mine.

My name.

My information.

But I had never rented a storage unit.

Rebecca leaned closer.

“When was it opened?””

The manager answered.

“Two years ago.””

Two years.

The same year Marcus and I got married.

“Who has access?”” Rebecca asked.

The manager checked.

“Two people.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“Who?””

He looked at the screen.

Then said:

“Aaliyah Carter.””

I stared.

“That’s me.””

“And…”

He paused.

“Marcus Carter.””

My heart sank.

He had opened a storage unit using my identity.

And I had no idea.

The manager handed us the access form.

“Would you like to see what’s inside?””

I looked at Rebecca.

Then nodded.

“Yes.””

The metal door rolled upward.

Inside were boxes.

Dozens of them.

Rebecca opened the first.

Documents.

The second.

Photos.

The third.

More files.

Then I found something that made my entire body go still.

A folder labeled:

*Final Transfer Plan.*

I opened it.

The first page contained one sentence.

*Phase One: Destroy Aaliyah’s credibility.*

The second page contained another.

*Phase Two: Remove her access to assets.*

Then I reached the final page.

My hands started shaking.

Because there was a date written at the top.

Tomorrow.

May you like

And below it:

*Phase Three: Take custody of Lily.*
