Chapter 2: The Secret Behind The Signature

Marcus stared at the final page for almost a full minute.

The confidence was gone.

The anger was gone.

The man who walked through my door expecting me to cry was now standing silently, gripping a piece of paper like it could somehow disappear.

“What is this?”” he whispered.

I leaned against the doorway.

“You tell me.””

Vanessa moved closer.

“Marcus?””

He ignored her.

His eyes stayed locked on the page.

I watched his face carefully.

I had imagined this moment many times.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted him to finally understand that he didn’t know everything about the woman he had spent four years underestimating.

“Aaliyah,” he said slowly.

“You did this?””

I frowned.

“Did what?””

He lifted the document.

“This agreement.””

I walked closer.

“The postnuptial agreement?””

Vanessa looked confused.

“What agreement?””

Marcus looked at her.

And for the first time that night, she looked worried.

I noticed.

That tiny change.

The confidence she had carried into my home started cracking.

“You never told her?”” I asked Marcus.

He said nothing.

I smiled sadly.

“Of course you didn’t.””

Four years earlier, when Marcus and I got married, I knew we loved each other.

But I also knew something else.

People changed.

Promises changed.

Situations changed.

My grandmother had once told me, “Love someone completely, but never disappear inside them.””

Those words stayed with me.

So before our wedding, I asked Marcus to sign a simple agreement.

Not because I expected him to betray me.

Because I wanted protection for both of us.

At the time, he laughed.

“You don’t trust me?””

I remembered standing in our old apartment kitchen, holding the papers.

“I trust you. I just believe marriage should be honest.””

He kissed my forehead.

“Fine. Whatever makes you feel safe.””

He signed.

Without reading every page.

Now, years later, that same signature was staring back at him.

Marcus dropped the document onto the table.

“You planned this.””

I looked at him.

“No. You did.””

His jaw tightened.

“You’re trying to punish me.””

“No, Marcus. I’m protecting myself.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Marcus, we don’t need to stand here and listen to this.””

I turned toward her.

“Interesting.””

She stopped.

“What?””

“You’ve been in my house for less than ten minutes, and you already think you have the right to decide what happens here.””

Her face changed.

“You’re being dramatic.””

I laughed quietly.

“Am I?””

I pointed toward the baby monitor.

“My husband walked in with another woman while I was taking care of our newborn daughter and told me to leave my own home.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“He said your marriage was already over.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Did you tell her everything?””

He looked away.

That answer was enough.

Vanessa’s expression shifted.

“What does that mean?””

I picked up another document.

“Ask him.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Aaliyah.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more protecting you.””

I opened the folder.

“Vanessa, did Marcus tell you that he stopped contributing to this house six months ago?””

She looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus immediately interrupted.

“That’s not important.””

“It is,” I said.

I turned back to Vanessa.

“Did he tell you that the reason he stopped helping with bills was because he was saving money for an apartment?””

Her face went pale.

Marcus’s eyes widened.

“How do you know that?””

I stared at him.

“Because I found the messages.””

Silence.

Vanessa looked between us.

“You told me you were looking for a place because you were leaving her.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I was.””

“No,” I said.

“You were looking for a place before you told me anything.””

Vanessa’s expression changed from anger to confusion.

“You said you were separated.””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“We were having problems.””

“That’s not what you told her.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I watched the woman who came into my home expecting to replace me realize something important.

Marcus wasn’t choosing her because he was brave.

He was choosing her because he thought he could escape consequences.

Vanessa stepped away from him.

“You lied to me?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No, Vanessa, wait—”

She held up a hand.

“Don’t.””

For a moment, I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Then I remembered her standing beside my husband while planning what color curtains she wanted.

Marcus turned back to me.

“You’re enjoying this.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I picked up Lily’s blanket from the couch.

“I’m tired.””

That was the truth.

I wasn’t enjoying watching my marriage collapse.

I was exhausted from carrying everything alone.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“You think this is over?””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

His expression changed.

The fear disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

“You really think you’re the only one who has secrets?””

My hand froze.

“What did you say?””

He smiled slightly.

A smile I had never seen before.

“Maybe you should ask yourself why I never fought for this house.””

My heart started beating faster.

Because suddenly, I remembered something.

The day Marcus moved in.

The strange conversation he had with my realtor.

The papers he asked to see.

The questions about my finances.

I had ignored them.

Because I trusted him.

Marcus picked up his jacket.

“Enjoy your victory tonight, Aaliyah.””

He walked toward the door.

Then he stopped.

Without turning around, he said:

“Tomorrow morning, you’ll find out exactly who owns what.””

The door closed.

I stood there in silence.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

And my hands went cold.

Because attached to the message was a photograph of my house deed…

with a signature I had never seen before.
