Chapter 6: The Marriage He Planned
I read the message five times.
The words didn’t change.
*He started planning it the day he married you.*
My first instinct was disbelief.
Because some truths are too painful to accept immediately.
Marcus had flaws.
Everyone did.
But planning?
From the beginning?
That meant every memory I treasured had to be questioned.
Our wedding.
Our first home.
The night he held Lily for the first time.
Were any of those moments real?
I called the number.
No answer.
I called again.
Still nothing.
Then a text appeared.
*Don’t call. He monitors people close to him.*
My hands tightened around my phone.
I looked around the house.
The walls suddenly felt different.
Like they were filled with secrets.
The next morning, Rebecca arrived with a stack of files.
“I found something.””
I looked at her.
“About Marcus?””
She nodded.
“He has been researching property ownership laws for almost two years.””
Two years.
I sat down.
“That’s before Lily.””
“Yes.””
Rebecca opened a folder.
“There’s more.””
Inside were printed emails.
Marcus had contacted financial advisors.
Lawyers.
Even real estate agents.
All while he was still telling me we were building a future together.
One email caught my attention.
The subject line:
*Protecting future assets after marriage.*
I read the first sentence.
*If the property remains solely in Aaliyah’s name, options are limited.*
I felt sick.
“He was studying how to take my house.””
Rebecca nodded.
“Looks that way.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
“Because he was careful.””
That word stayed with me.
Careful.
Marcus wasn’t impulsive.
He wasn’t confused.
He wasn’t a husband who suddenly made a terrible choice.
He was someone who waited.
Someone who watched.
Someone who learned.
My phone rang.
This time, it was Vanessa.
I almost didn’t answer.
But I did.
“What do you want?””
Her voice sounded different.
Less confident.
“Aaliyah, we need to talk.””
I almost laughed.
“Do we?””
“Yes.””
“About what?””
A pause.
Then:
“Marcus lied to me too.””
I said nothing.
She continued.
“He told me your marriage was already over.””
“And you believed him.””
“Yes.””
Her voice cracked.
“I was stupid.””
I looked out the window.
“I don’t care about your relationship with Marcus.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you calling?””
Another pause.
“Because I found something.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
“I found a folder at his apartment.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What kind of folder?””
“He called it his backup plan.””
The room went silent.
“Vanessa.””
“Yes?””
“What was inside?””
Her voice lowered.
“Documents about you.””
I stood.
“Where are you?””
She gave me an address.
Twenty minutes later, I was sitting across from Vanessa in a small coffee shop.
It felt surreal.
A few days ago, she stood in my living room telling me it would become her home.
Now she was sitting across from me, looking afraid.
She placed a folder on the table.
“I didn’t know.””
I stared at it.
“Know what?””
“That he was using me.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were copies of my personal information.
Bank statements.
Property records.
Private documents.
But then I saw something else.
A photograph.
My wedding day.
Marcus and me.
Smiling.
Happy.
On the back was handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
Marcus’s handwriting.
The words were simple.
*Step one complete.*
My blood went cold.
Vanessa watched my face.
“There are more pages.””
I turned them.
The next page had dates.
Plans.
Goals.
And at the top was a title.
*Five-Year Strategy.*
I read the first line.
*Marry Aaliyah. Gain access. Build trust. Secure assets.*
I couldn’t breathe.
The man I loved hadn’t just betrayed me.
He had studied me.
He had entered my life with a plan.
Vanessa whispered:
“Aaliyah…”
I kept reading.
The final page had one sentence.
One sentence that explained everything.
*The house is only the beginning.*
I looked up.
“What else does he want?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.
Then my phone rang.
Rebecca.
I answered immediately.
Her voice was urgent.
“Aaliyah, you need to come back right now.””
“What happened?””
“I found Marcus’s real plan.””
I stood.
“What plan?””
A pause.
Then Rebecca said:
“He’s not trying to take your house.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then what is he trying to take?””
Her voice dropped.
“He’s trying to prove that everything you own…”
May you like
A long silence.
“…was actually built with money that belongs to him.””
