Chapter 8: The Battle For My Daughter
I couldn’t breathe.
The words blurred.
*Take custody of Lily.*
Everything Marcus had done suddenly connected.
The house.
The fake documents.
The lies about my mental state.
The attempt to make me look unstable.
It was never about property.
The house was only a distraction.
His real goal was my daughter.
Rebecca took the document from my hand.
“Aaliyah…”
I couldn’t answer.
I was staring at the pictures inside the box.
Pictures of me.
Sleeping after Lily was born.
Holding the baby.
Crying.
Exhausted.
Moments that were supposed to be private.
Moments someone had collected as evidence.
“He was watching me.””
Rebecca’s expression hardened.
“Yes.””
I touched one photograph.
“This was taken in my bedroom.””
She looked at the image.
“Can you prove that?””
I looked at the date.
Then I remembered.
That day.
Marcus had said he was taking a picture because Lily looked cute.
I believed him.
My hands shook.
“He used my trust.””
Rebecca closed the box.
“Then we use his mistake against him.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
“Because people who plan everything often leave too much evidence behind.””
The next morning, we went to court.
I had never been in a courtroom before.
I always thought people exaggerated how intimidating they felt.
They didn’t.
The silence.
The serious faces.
The feeling that every word mattered.
It was overwhelming.
Marcus walked in wearing a suit.
Perfectly pressed.
Confident.
Like the loving husband everyone believed he was.
Vanessa wasn’t with him.
Daniel was.
That surprised me.
Marcus saw him.
His expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
Fear.
Good.
The judge looked over the documents.
Marcus’s attorney spoke first.
“Your Honor, my client has made significant financial contributions to the marital home and has concerns about the welfare of his child.””
My stomach tightened.
There it was.
The story he created.
Rebecca stood.
“Your Honor, the evidence will show that Mr. Carter intentionally created false documents to claim ownership of property he did not purchase.””
Marcus looked at me.
Not angry.
Not worried.
Amused.
Like he still believed he would win.
His attorney presented the bank statements.
“The evidence shows Mr. Carter contributed financially.””
Rebecca stood.
“Those records are fabricated.””
The courtroom shifted.
Marcus’s attorney frowned.
“Do you have proof?””
Rebecca smiled slightly.
“Yes.””
She walked toward the evidence table.
“First, we have the original bank records.””
She placed them down.
“Second, we have confirmation that the account used was created after the supposed payments occurred.””
Marcus’s face changed.
His attorney whispered something.
Rebecca continued.
“And third…”
She looked directly at Marcus.
“We have evidence showing Mr. Carter planned this action long before any alleged marital conflict.””
The judge looked up.
“What evidence?””
Rebecca opened the storage unit files.
The courtroom became silent.
Marcus’s attorney stood.
“Your Honor, these documents are irrelevant.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“They are directly relevant because they demonstrate intent.””
She handed the judge the folder.
“Mr. Carter created a five-year plan to gain access to his wife’s assets and use their child as leverage.””
Marcus finally spoke.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Everyone looked at him.
His calm expression was gone.
“You’re making her sound like I’m some kind of criminal.””
Rebecca turned toward him.
“Did you or did you not create a storage unit under your wife’s name?””
Marcus froze.
A second.
Two seconds.
The silence answered for him.
The judge looked at him.
“Mr. Carter?””
His attorney interrupted.
“My client has an explanation.””
Rebecca nodded.
“I’m sure he does.””
Then she placed another document down.
“One that I believe the court will find interesting.””
The judge looked at it.
“What is this?””
Rebecca answered:
“A recording authorization.””
My eyebrows lifted.
I had never seen this before.
Rebecca looked at me briefly.
Then back at the judge.
“This was found inside the storage unit.””
Marcus’s face turned pale.
“What recording?””
Rebecca opened the file.
“The recording of Mr. Carter explaining his plan to another person.””
The courtroom went completely silent.
Marcus stood.
“You can’t use that.””
The judge looked at him.
“Why not?””
Marcus said nothing.
And that was when I knew.
Rebecca had found something.
Something Marcus never expected anyone to discover.
The judge looked at the file.
“Play it.””
Rebecca nodded.
A voice filled the courtroom.
Marcus’s voice.
Clear.
Calm.
Confident.
“I just need Aaliyah to believe she’s safe until everything is ready.””
My entire body froze.
Then his voice continued.
“Once she loses the house, she’ll have nowhere to go.””
A pause.
Then:
“And once the court sees how exhausted she is with the baby, custody will be easy.””
I looked at Marcus.
His face had lost all color.
The recording continued.
“We just need everyone to believe she’s unstable.””
The courtroom was silent.
Then came the final sentence.
The sentence that destroyed him.
“I married her because she already had everything I needed.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain was sharp.
But this time, I didn’t break.
Because the truth was finally out.
Then the judge looked at Marcus.
And said:
“Mr. Carter, before we continue…”
A long pause.
“I have one question.””
Everyone waited.

The judge looked at the evidence.
“Who is the person you were speaking to in this recording?””
