Chapter 6: The Question Clara Never Answered

I didn’t sleep.

Not because of the vacation.

Not because of my father.

Not even because of Vanessa.

Because of one sentence.

“Ask your wife about the night before your wedding.””

The words repeated in my head until morning.

Clara noticed immediately.

She always noticed.

“You’re quiet.””

I looked up from my coffee.

“Sorry.””

She sat across from me.

“You haven’t slept.””

I forced a smile.

“I’m fine.””

She studied my face.

“No, you’re not.””

That was Clara.

She could read me better than anyone.

I looked at her.

“Did something happen before we got married?””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A tiny pause.

A tiny hesitation.

And somehow that scared me more than anger.

“What do you mean?””

I swallowed.

“The night before our wedding.””

The room went silent.

Clara lowered her eyes.

“Why are you asking me that?””

My chest tightened.

Because she didn’t say, “What are you talking about?””

She didn’t laugh.

She didn’t look confused.

She knew.

“I got a call from Vanessa.””

Clara’s face became pale.

“What did she say?””

“She said Dad found out something.””

Clara looked away.

“About me?””

I nodded.

The silence between us felt heavier than anything my family had done.

Finally, she whispered:

“I was hoping I would never have to tell you.””

Those words broke something inside me.

Not because she had a secret.

Because she had been carrying it alone.

I reached across the table.

“Clara.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Before we got married, I made a mistake.””

My heart raced.

“What kind of mistake?””

She took a deep breath.

“When I first met your family, I wasn’t honest about one thing.””

I waited.

She looked at me.

“I wasn’t poor.””

I blinked.

“What?””

She gave a small, sad smile.

“I know that sounds strange.””

“I don’t understand.””

She looked toward the window.

“When I met you, I had just left a difficult situation. I wanted a normal life. I wanted someone to love me without knowing my background.””

My voice softened.

“Clara, what are you saying?””

She reached for her phone.

Then she opened a message she had saved for years.

A name appeared on the screen.

A name I recognized.

Someone from the business world.

Someone my father respected.

My stomach dropped.

“Your father knows because he found out who my family really is.””

I stared at the message.

Then back at her.

“Who are you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

And before she could answer, my phone buzzed.

A new message.

From my father.

May you like

One sentence.

“Now you know why we never wanted her in this family.””
