Chapter 2: The Phone Call at 11:47 PM

The hospital lights were too bright.

That was the first thing I noticed.

After leaving my parents’ house, I drove straight there while Clara sat beside me with one hand over her belly.

She barely spoke.

That scared me more than anything.

Clara was always the person who tried to make everyone comfortable. She apologized when someone else hurt her. She smiled when she was exhausted.

But that night, she was silent.

The doctor examined her for nearly an hour.

I stood beside the bed, gripping Clara’s hand.

Finally, the doctor smiled.

“The baby is okay.””

The relief hit me so hard my knees almost gave out.

Clara closed her eyes.

“Thank God.””

I kissed her hand.

“I’m sorry.””

She opened her eyes.

“For what?””

“For bringing you there.””

She looked away.

“You didn’t throw that glass.””

“No. But I kept making excuses for them.””

The room became quiet.

After a moment, Clara whispered:

“I always thought if I was kind enough, they would eventually accept me.””

My chest tightened.

“They should have accepted you from the beginning.””

She looked at me.

“Do you still love them?””

The question hurt because the answer was complicated.

“They’re my parents.””

“That wasn’t what I asked.””

I looked down.

“I don’t know anymore.””

The doctor eventually cleared us to go home.

By the time we arrived, Clara was exhausted. I helped her change into comfortable clothes, made sure she took her medication, and stayed beside her until her breathing became steady.

At 11:30 p.m., she finally fell asleep.

I sat alone in the living room.

The house was silent.

On my phone was the vacation confirmation email.

A reminder popped up.

“Your family’s Mediterranean adventure begins tomorrow.””

I stared at the screen.

For years, my family had treated my success like a family resource.

When Vanessa needed a new car, I helped.

When my parents remodeled their kitchen, I paid.

When they wanted the vacation of a lifetime, I made it happen.

I never complained.

Because I thought helping them meant loving them.

But love without respect becomes permission.

At 11:47 p.m., I opened my laptop.

My fingers hovered over the keyboard.

Then I called the travel concierge.

A calm voice answered.

“Good evening. How may I assist you?””

I looked toward the bedroom where Clara was sleeping.

Then I said:

“Cancel everything.””

There was a pause.

“Everything, sir?””

“Yes.””

“The flights?””

“Yes.””

“The private yacht reservations?””

“Yes.””

“The luxury accommodations and tours?””

“All of it.””

The woman checked the account.

“May I ask the reason for cancellation?””

I looked at the family photo on the wall.

A picture from Christmas.

Everyone smiling.

Everyone pretending.

“Because the people going on this trip just showed me exactly what they think I’m worth.””

She was silent for a moment.

Then she said:

“I understand.””

Within minutes, the $150,000 vacation disappeared.

The flights were canceled.

The suites were released.

The private tours vanished.

The dream they had bragged about for months was gone.

I expected to feel angry.

Instead, I felt calm.

For the first time in years, I wasn’t fixing their problems.

I was finally allowing them to face their choices.

The next morning, Clara woke up and found me making breakfast.

“You look different,” she said.

I smiled.

“Different how?””

“Like someone finally stopped carrying a weight.””

I sat beside her.

“I canceled the vacation.””

Her eyes widened.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

She was quiet.

Then she reached for my hand.

“Are you sure?””

I nodded.

“They hurt you.””

She looked down.

“I never wanted you to lose your family.””

I squeezed her fingers.

“They made that choice. Not me.””

At that exact moment, my phone started vibrating.

Once.

Twice.

Then nonstop.

I looked at the screen.

Twenty-three missed calls.

All from my mother.

Then another notification appeared.

A text message from Vanessa.

I opened it.

May you like

And the first sentence made me realize they still had no idea what they had done.

“Your account must be wrong…”
