Chapter 14: The House Full of Lies

The old house looked exactly the same.

That was the strangest part.

The paint was faded.

The front garden was overgrown.

The wooden porch creaked beneath my feet.

But somehow, it still looked like the place where I had grown up.

The place where my father taught me to ride a bike.

The place where my mother made birthday cakes.

The place where I thought my family was normal.

Now I knew it was built on secrets.

Vanessa unlocked the door.

Her hands were shaking.

“I haven’t been here in years.””

I looked at her.

“Why did you come back?””

She swallowed.

“Because I was hoping I could forget.””

Clara stood beside me.

“You can’t forget something you helped create.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

Inside, everything smelled old.

Dust.

Wood.

Memories.

The family photos on the walls made my stomach turn.

There we were.

Smiling.

Happy.

A perfect picture.

A perfect lie.

My mother walked behind us quietly.

She had barely spoken since arriving.

I think seeing the house brought back too many memories.

We reached my father’s old office.

The room was untouched.

The same desk.

The same shelves.

The same chair where he used to sit and tell me about honesty.

I almost laughed.

“Where?””

Vanessa looked around.

“Behind the bookshelf.””

She walked toward the wall.

I frowned.

“You remember?””

“Yes.””

She touched the wooden frame.

“When Dad asked me to steal the documents, I was scared.””

She pressed a hidden panel.

A small compartment opened.

Inside was an empty space.

My heart sank.

“No.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“It was here.””

My mother gasped.

“What?””

“The documents.””

“They’re gone.””

I looked around.

My father had beaten us here.

He knew.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

My father.

“Looking for something?””

My blood went cold.

“You were here.””

A quiet laugh.

“I built that house.””

“You stole the evidence.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I protected my family.””

I clenched my fist.

“You framed an innocent man.””

“He would have destroyed us.””

“He was protecting you!””

My father became silent.

Then he said:

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“You think this is about money.””

I frowned.

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

His voice lowered.

“It’s about survival.””

I looked at Clara.

“Where are you?””

He ignored the question.

“You should ask Vanessa why she never told you the whole truth.””

I looked at my sister.

“What else?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

My father continued.

“She wasn’t just helping me.””

The room froze.

“What are you saying?””

“She was protecting herself.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Dad, stop.””

But he kept going.

“Tell him what you did after you took the documents.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked broken.

“Vanessa?””

She couldn’t answer.

My father smiled through the phone.

“She knows exactly where the missing evidence went.””

I hung up.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I didn’t destroy it.””

“Then where is it?””

She looked at the floor.

“I gave it to someone.””

“Who?””

Her voice barely came out.

“Michael.””

Everyone went silent.

I stared at her.

“You gave the evidence to Michael Whitmore?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I realized Dad was lying.””

I shook my head.

“When?””

“Years later.””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“Michael came back once.””

My heart raced.

“He was alive?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

She looked at Clara.

“He asked me to help expose your father.””

I stepped closer.

“And you refused?””

She nodded.

“I was afraid.””

The silence was painful.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Michael.

Only five words.

“Don’t trust Vanessa. She knows.””

I looked up.

My sister was crying.

My father was hiding.

May you like

My wife was terrified.

And suddenly I didn’t know who was telling the truth.
