Chapter 11: The Test They Never Wanted Me to See

I couldn’t move.

The DNA report sat in my hands.

A piece of paper.

A few numbers.

A few sentences.

And somehow, it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

“Clara.””

She looked terrified.

“I swear, I didn’t know about that.””

I looked at the page again.

The names were clear.

The test wasn’t between me and the baby.

It was between Clara and someone else.

“Who is Michael Whitmore?””

Her face changed.

I saw recognition.

Pain.

Fear.

All at once.

“My brother.””

I froze.

“You have a brother?””

She nodded slowly.

“Half-brother.””

I sat down.

“You never mentioned him.””

“Because he’s been gone for years.””

I looked at the report.

“And my father has this?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Clara stood up and walked toward the kitchen.

“I need to tell you something.””

Another secret.

Another piece of the truth.

I almost laughed.

My entire marriage felt like a room full of locked doors.

She came back holding an old photograph.

A young man stood beside her.

They looked alike.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

“That’s Michael.””

“What happened to him?””

She looked down.

“My father and Michael fought.””

“About what?””

“About the company.””

I listened.

“Michael believed my father was too forgiving. He thought people who betrayed the family should never be trusted again.””

My stomach tightened.

“Your father?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“My brother.””

I understood.

Michael was angry about the same thing.

The betrayal.

The missing money.

The past.

“What does this have to do with my father?””

Clara placed the photograph down.

“Michael disappeared after he discovered evidence about what happened twenty years ago.””

I frowned.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“And your father thinks my father had something to do with it?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the DNA report again.

“Then why does my father have this?””

Clara was silent.

That was the answer.

She didn’t know.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Are you Daniel Bennett’s son?””

I froze.

“Yes.””

“My name is Michael Whitmore.””

The room went completely still.

I looked at Clara.

Her face drained of color.

“No,” she whispered.

The voice continued.

“I know you found the documents.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who gave you my number?””

“That doesn’t matter.””

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Somewhere your father can’t reach me.””

I stood up.

“You’re alive?””

A quiet laugh.

“Yes.””

Clara covered her mouth.

The man continued.

“Your father has spent twenty years making sure nobody knew the truth.””

I looked at the folder.

“What truth?””

His voice became serious.

“The truth that he didn’t just steal from my family.””

My heart raced.

“What did he do?””

“He destroyed two families.””

The call went silent for a moment.

Then Michael said:

“And your wife is the only reason he hasn’t been exposed.””

I looked at Clara.

She looked just as confused as I was.

“What does Clara have to do with this?””

Michael answered:

“Because she has the original evidence.””

I turned to my wife.

She shook her head.

“I don’t.””

Michael spoke again.

“She does.””

Then the call ended.

I lowered the phone slowly.

Clara looked at me.

“I don’t know what he’s talking about.””

But before I could answer, there was another sound.

A notification.

A new email.

From an address I didn’t recognize.

The subject line said:

“Your father’s first victim.””
