Chapter 17: The Secret Inside the Letter

I put the phone on speaker.

My father’s voice filled the room.

“You think you understand what happened.””

I looked at the letter in Clara’s hands.

“Do you?””

He laughed softly.

“That’s your problem, son. You always want simple answers.””

“You framed Daniel.””

“No.””

“You stole from him.””

“I protected myself.””

I felt anger rising.

“Why do you keep saying that?””

“Because one day, when you know everything, you’ll understand.””

I looked at Clara.

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

For once, my father didn’t have an immediate response.

That scared me.

“Read the letter.””

He hung up.

Everyone stared at the paper.

Clara unfolded it completely.

The handwriting was old.

Careful.

The first paragraph made my heart race.

“My greatest mistake was trusting Daniel Bennett.””

I looked at Clara.

“What?””

She kept reading.

“My greatest regret was believing ambition could be controlled.””

The letter wasn’t from Daniel accusing my father.

It was from someone else.

Someone who knew them both.

At the bottom was a name.

A name that none of us expected.

My mother.

I stared.

“Mom wrote this?””

My mother stepped backward.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Mom?””

My mother’s face went pale.

“I was young.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“You knew.””

She started crying.

“I didn’t know how far he would go.””

“That’s what everyone says.””

She looked at me.

“I tried to stop him.””

“After helping him?””

She looked down.

The letter continued.

“I helped Daniel hide the evidence because I finally understood what my husband had done.””

My breathing stopped.

My mother had helped hide the proof.

Not because she supported my father.

Because she was afraid of him.

“She betrayed him,” Vanessa whispered.

My mother nodded.

“I did.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I realized the man I married was not the man I thought he was.””

The letter revealed everything.

After my father stole the documents, my mother discovered the truth.

She secretly copied evidence.

She planned to expose him.

But then she found out something worse.

A hidden account.

Money wasn’t the only thing my father had taken.

He had been preparing to leave.

To disappear.

Leaving all of them behind.

Including us.

“He was going to abandon us?”” I asked.

My mother nodded.

“He had another identity prepared.””

The room went silent.

My father wasn’t protecting his family.

He was protecting himself.

The letter ended with one final sentence.

“If anything happens to me, the person responsible will not be the man who holds the knife. It will be the man who convinced everyone he was innocent.””

Clara looked at me.

“Daniel knew.””

I nodded.

“He knew my father would manipulate everyone.””

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

A photo.

I opened it.

My father standing outside a private airport.

With a suitcase.

The timestamp was today.

Vanessa looked over my shoulder.

“He’s leaving.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

Another message appeared.

A flight number.

A destination.

Then a final text.

“He has the original evidence with him.””

I looked at everyone.

My father wasn’t running because he was guilty.

He was running because he knew we were close.

And if he left the country, we might never get the truth.

I grabbed my jacket.

“We’re going after him.””

Clara stood.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I’m not letting you face him alone.””

For the first time in days, I smiled.

Not because things were okay.

Because I finally remembered something.

May you like

My wife had never been the person I needed to protect from my family.

She was the person who had been protecting me.
