Chapter 13: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much

The room went silent.

Not the comfortable kind of silence.

The kind that arrives when someone finally says the thing everyone has been avoiding.

I stared at Vanessa.

My sister.

The person who had thrown a glass at my pregnant wife.

The person who had spent days blaming me for canceling a vacation.

And now she was standing in my home, admitting she had been part of my father’s biggest secret.

“What did you do?””

My voice came out colder than I expected.

Vanessa looked at the floor.

My mother immediately stepped in.

“Don’t speak to her like that.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew too.””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I laughed quietly.

“Of course.””

My whole life, I had thought my family was just difficult.

Proud.

Stubborn.

Selfish.

I never imagined they were hiding something much darker.

Clara moved closer to me.

“Vanessa, tell the truth.””

My sister looked at her.

For once, there was no anger in her eyes.

Only guilt.

“Twenty years ago, I was a child.””

I frowned.

“How old?””

“Sixteen.””

My mother grabbed her arm.

“Vanessa.””

“No, Mom.””

She pulled away.

“I’m tired of protecting everyone.””

That sentence surprised me.

She sat down slowly.

“My father had been angry for months before everything happened.””

She looked at me.

“He believed Daniel Whitmore stole his future.””

I shook my head.

“He stole from Daniel.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know that now.””

“Now?””

She looked away.

“At the time, I believed whatever Dad told me.””

That sounded familiar.

Because that was how my father operated.

He didn’t just control actions.

He controlled stories.

“He told me Daniel was going to destroy our family,” Vanessa continued.

“He said we had to protect ourselves.””

Clara crossed her arms.

“And how did you help him?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I copied a key.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“To Daniel’s office.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Vanessa, stop.””

“No.””

My sister’s voice shook.

“I need to say it.””

She looked at me.

“Dad asked me to get documents.””

I felt cold.

“What documents?””

“The original financial records.””

Clara whispered:

“The evidence.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He said he needed them to prove Daniel was hiding something.””

I stared at her.

“And you believed him?””

“I was sixteen.””

“You were old enough to know stealing was wrong.””

She flinched.

“I know.””

For the first time, she looked ashamed.

“I took the documents.””

The room felt smaller.

“What happened after?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I gave them to Dad.””

“And?””

“And the next day, Daniel’s company accused him of stealing.””

Clara’s face changed.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

She looked confused.

“Those documents weren’t enough to prove anything.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Because they weren’t the real documents.””

I froze.

“What?””

My sister’s eyes filled with tears.

“Dad changed them.””

The truth hit harder than I expected.

“He used the documents you stole.””

“Yes.””

“To frame Daniel?””

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Clara asked quietly:

“Why are you telling us now?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because I saw what Dad did to you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The vacation.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I thought he was angry at Clara because of her family. But when he started threatening you…”

She shook her head.

“I realized he would destroy anyone.””

I looked at my mother.

“And you?””

She finally spoke.

“I was scared.””

I stared at her.

“You watched him do all of this?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared of losing everything.””

The answer disgusted me.

“Your son was losing everything.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message.

From Michael.

I opened it.

My heart stopped.

“Your father knows Vanessa talked.””

I looked up.

Another message appeared.

“He is going after the evidence tonight.””

Clara grabbed my arm.

“What evidence?””

I read the next line.

“The original documents are hidden where your father will never look.””

I typed back.

“Where?””

The response came instantly.

“Your childhood home.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

Her face turned pale.

Because she understood.

“No.””

“What?””

She stood up.

“Dad knows about that place.””

“What place?””

She looked at me.

“The house where you grew up.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

May you like

Vanessa whispered:

“Because that’s where I hid the original documents twenty years ago.””
