Chapter 15: The Truth Behind the Missing Evidence
Nobody spoke after the message arrived.
Five words.
“Don’t trust Vanessa. She knows.””
They felt like a knife.
Because I wanted to believe Vanessa.
I wanted to believe someone in my family had finally chosen honesty.
But every time I trusted someone, another secret appeared.
I looked at my sister.
“What does Michael mean?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
“You knew where the evidence was.””
“Yes.””
“You gave it to Michael.””
“Yes.””
“Then what don’t I know?””
She looked at my mother.
My mother looked away.
That reaction told me everything.
“You both know.””
My mother whispered:
“There are things you were better not knowing.””
I laughed.
“Is that your excuse for everything?””
She didn’t answer.
Clara stepped forward.
“No more.””
Everyone looked at her.
“No more protecting people who hurt others.””
Her voice was calm.
But firm.
“The truth comes out now.””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“I didn’t give Michael the evidence because I wanted to help him.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“After Dad changed the documents, he became obsessed.””
“With what?””
“With making sure nobody could expose him.””
She looked at Clara.
“And then he found out who Clara was.””
I already knew that part.
But Vanessa continued.
“He realized he could use her family to destroy you.””
Clara went quiet.
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I knew Dad would eventually hurt you.””
“So you hid the evidence?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“In a safety deposit box.””
I stared.
“Where?””
“In your name.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I opened it years ago.””
“Why put it under my name?””
“Because Dad trusted you.””
I felt sick.
“My father trusted me?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He never thought you would question him.””
The irony was painful.
She continued:
“The key was hidden in your old bedroom.””
I looked around the house.
“That’s why you came here.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me before?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was afraid you would hate me.””
I almost answered immediately.
But I stopped.
Because I did hate what she did.
But I also saw something else.
Regret.
Real regret.
My phone rang.
Michael.
I answered.
“You lied to me.””
His voice was quiet.
“I warned you.””
“You said Vanessa knew.””
“She does.””
“She hid the evidence to protect me.””
A pause.
Then Michael said:
“She hid part of it.””
My chest tightened.
“Part?””
“Yes.””
“What part?””
“She kept the most important piece.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What did you keep?””
Her face went pale.
“I didn’t know it was important.””
“What was it?””
She whispered:
“A letter.””
“From who?””
“Your father.””
The room froze.
“What letter?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“The letter where he admitted everything.””
My breathing stopped.
“Where is it?””
She looked at me.
“I gave it to Clara.””
Everyone turned.
Including me.
Clara went completely still.
“What?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I gave it to you years ago.””
Clara shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“I would remember.””
“You don’t.””
My heart started racing.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa looked at Clara.
“He made sure you forgot.””
A cold feeling spread through the room.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your father.””
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
From my father.
One sentence.
“You finally found the letter.””
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
“You just don’t know where it is.””
