Chapter 8: The Truth About Daniel

The room felt smaller.

Much smaller.

I stared at the stranger standing in my house.

Daniel.

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way Jason looked at him meant everything.

Jason stepped forward.

“Daniel, leave.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I should have come sooner.””

Margaret looked confused.

“Who is this man?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Jason.

“Tell me.””

He stayed silent.

That silence had become his answer for everything.

Daniel looked at me.

“I’m sorry you had to find out like this.””

I held the folder tighter.

“Find out what?””

He looked at Jason.

“That he has been lying to you about more than just his past.””

My stomach tightened.

I was tired.

Tired of secrets.

Tired of people walking into my life carrying pieces of the truth.

“Say it.””

Daniel nodded.

“I’m Jason’s doctor.””

Jason’s face changed.

I looked at him.

“Doctor?””

Daniel continued.

“Years ago, after Jason received his fertility diagnosis, he came to me for another opinion.””

Claire looked shocked.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“I did.””

Jason looked angry.

“You promised.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I promised to respect your privacy.””

He paused.

“But I never promised to help you hurt people.””

The room went silent.

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Daniel opened the folder.

“Jason’s original diagnosis was incomplete.””

Jason closed his eyes.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“He was told there was a chance he could have biological children.””

Claire whispered.

“Then why did he leave?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was obvious.

Jason hadn’t left because he had no choice.

He left because he believed he had an excuse.

I looked at him.

“You destroyed a family because you were afraid?””

Jason looked broken.

“I was young.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were selfish.””

He flinched.

Daniel placed another document on the table.

“This is the report from years ago.””

I picked it up.

I read the words slowly.

The possibility.

The uncertainty.

The explanation.

Everything Jason had turned into a tragedy.

Everything he had used to justify disappearing.

It was never the truth.

It was a choice.

Claire sat down.

Her hands were shaking.

“My daughter grew up believing her father abandoned her.””

Jason looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

She laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because the apology was too late.

“You’re sorry?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She waited by the window every Friday because she thought you would come back.””

Jason looked away.

I watched him.

The man who had told me he was a family man.

The man who judged me for not doing enough.

The man who demanded loyalty while giving none.

Daniel looked at me.

“There is one more thing.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The DNA result.””

Everyone became still.

“The reason the baby’s information didn’t match Jason is because the sample submitted was not his.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“Someone replaced the sample before it reached the lab.””

The room exploded into confusion.

Jason looked at Margaret.

Samantha looked terrified.

Claire looked at everyone.

I felt cold.

Someone had wanted me to believe Jason wasn’t the father.

Someone had manipulated the test.

But why?

Daniel opened the folder again.

“We traced the access records.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“Who?””

Daniel looked around the room.

Then his eyes stopped.

Not on Jason.

Not on Claire.

On Margaret.

The room went silent.

Margaret’s face changed.

“What?””

Daniel spoke carefully.

“The person who accessed the paperwork was registered under your name.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Margaret stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

I stared at the woman who had spent months telling me I wasn’t good enough.

The woman who watched me struggle.

The woman who always seemed to know more than she admitted.

“Margaret…”

She looked at me.

And for the first time since I entered this family…

She looked afraid.

Then Samantha whispered:

“Mom…”

Margaret slowly reached into her purse.

Pulled out her phone.

And deleted something.

But not before I saw the name on the screen.

A name I never expected.

May you like

A name that changed everything.
