Chapter 5: The Test Nobody Expected

The words from the doctor echoed through the room.

“The baby’s biological information doesn’t match the father listed on the paperwork.””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

Every person in that room was staring at me.

But I wasn’t looking at them.

I was looking at Jason.

Because his face had already answered the question my mind was trying to understand.

He wasn’t shocked.

He was terrified.

“Emily?”” the doctor said through the phone.

“Are you still there?””

I forced myself to speak.

“Yes.””

“If you’d like, we can schedule an appointment to discuss the results in person.””

My hand trembled.

“Thank you, Doctor. I’ll call back.””

I ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Jason finally whispered.

“Emily…”

I raised my hand.

“Don’t.””

His mouth closed.

For once, he listened.

Margaret looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

I turned toward her.

“You heard him.””

She looked at Jason.

“Jason?””

He didn’t answer.

Samantha stood slowly from the sofa.

“Wait. Are you saying…”

She looked at my stomach.

Then at her brother.

“Is the baby not yours?””

I hated that question.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was exactly what everyone was thinking.

Jason stepped forward.

“That test could be wrong.””

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

His eyes widened.

“No.””

“You knew.””

My voice became stronger.

“You weren’t surprised.””

Jason looked away.

That tiny movement broke something inside me.

Because I had spent months defending this man.

Against his family.

Against my own doubts.

Against every little feeling that told me something was wrong.

And now he couldn’t even look me in the eyes.

Claire stood near the doorway, silent.

She looked at Jason differently now.

Not with anger.

With understanding.

“You knew there was a possibility.””

Jason turned toward her.

“Stay out of this.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“For once, I’m not staying quiet.””

Margaret looked between them.

“What is happening?””

I laughed softly.

A tired, broken laugh.

“That’s the question, isn’t it?””

I walked toward the kitchen and grabbed the edge of the counter.

My body felt heavy.

Not just because of the pregnancy.

Because everything I believed about my life was collapsing.

Jason followed me.

“Emily, please.””

I looked at him.

“Please what?””

He had no answer.

“Please trust you?””

He swallowed.

“Please let me explain.””

I stared at him.

“Then explain.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Seconds passed.

Then Claire spoke.

“Tell her about the night you disappeared.””

Jason’s face changed.

“Claire.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“Tell her what you did.””

I looked at Jason.

“What is she talking about?””

Jason rubbed his face.

“This isn’t about you.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“Everything happening right now is about me.””

Claire looked at me.

“The reason Jason left our marriage wasn’t because he felt trapped.””

Jason’s expression hardened.

“Enough.””

“He was afraid.””

I frowned.

“Afraid of what?””

Claire looked directly at him.

“Afraid that people would find out he wasn’t who he pretended to be.””

The room went silent.

Margaret shook her head.

“My son made mistakes, but he’s not a bad person.””

Claire looked at her.

“You still don’t know everything.””

Jason’s voice became sharp.

“Claire, leave.””

She didn’t move.

Instead, she reached into her folder and pulled out another document.

“This is why I came here.””

She handed it to me.

I looked down.

A court document.

A custody agreement.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

A name.

A name I recognized.

“Jason…”

My voice became quiet.

“What is this?””

He didn’t answer.

Claire did.

“It’s the reason he never wanted you asking questions about his past.””

I kept reading.

The document mentioned financial responsibility.

Medical costs.

Child support.

And something else.

A signature.

A signature showing Jason had agreed to something.

Something he never told me about.

I looked up.

“You told me you had no children.””

Jason’s eyes filled with frustration.

“I didn’t want my past ruining our future.””

I stared at him.

“Your past?””

I held up the papers.

“This is not a forgotten memory, Jason.””

My voice cracked.

“This is a person.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew.

He wasn’t hiding a mistake.

He was hiding a life.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From the hospital.

My fingers went cold.

I opened it.

There was a second attachment.

A note from the laboratory.

I read it once.

Then again.

My knees almost gave out.

Because the DNA result wasn’t only about Jason.

There was another name attached.

Another person.

A person who had been in this house.

A person who had been watching everything happen.

I slowly lifted my eyes.

May you like

And everyone followed my gaze.

Toward Claire.
