Chapter 3: The Woman at the Door
The woman standing outside our house was the last person I expected to see.
Jason knew her.
I could tell by the way his face changed.
The color drained from his cheeks. His hand tightened around the papers I had given him, crushing the edges.
For the first time in a long time, my husband looked afraid.
Not annoyed.
Not impatient.
Afraid.
Margaret walked toward the front door, confused.
“Jason? Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
The woman outside knocked again.
“Jason, please. I know you’re in there.””
Samantha stood up from the sofa.
“Wait… she knows your name?””
Nobody spoke.
I watched Jason carefully.
The man who always had an excuse.
The man who always knew exactly what to say.
Now he had nothing.
“Who is she?”” I asked.
Jason swallowed.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
I stepped closer.
“Not Emily. Not right now.””
His eyes met mine.
“Tell me who she is.””
Before he could respond, Margaret opened the door.
The woman standing there was probably around my age. She wore a simple gray coat, even though the Texas afternoon was warm. Her hair was messy, like she had driven a long distance without stopping.
When she saw Jason, her eyes filled with relief.
Then she looked past him.
And saw me.
Her expression changed.
“Oh.””
One word.
One tiny word.
But it carried everything.
I knew.
Somehow, I knew.
Margaret looked between them.
“Jason?””
The woman stepped back.
“You didn’t tell her.””
Nobody moved.
The silence felt heavier than the heat outside.
I looked at Jason.
“You didn’t tell me what?””
The woman lowered her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Jason finally found his voice.
“Claire, you shouldn’t be here.””
Claire.
The name landed like a stone in my stomach.
Margaret looked shocked.
“Claire?””
Samantha looked at Jason.
“Who is Claire?””
I almost wanted to laugh.
Everyone in that room was asking questions.
Everyone except me.
Because I already knew the answer.
I just didn’t know how much of it was true.
Claire looked at me.
“I didn’t know you were pregnant.””
My fingers moved instinctively to my stomach.
Jason stepped between us.
“Claire, stop.””
“No,” she said quietly.
“She deserves to know.””
His jaw tightened.
“Not like this.””
“Then when?”” Claire asked.
“After the baby is born?””
My heart stopped.
The baby.
Born.
Why would she say that?
I looked at Jason.
“Explain.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Emily, it’s complicated.””
I stared at him.
“That’s what people say when the truth is worse.””
Margaret immediately stepped in.
“Jason, what is going on?””
For once, she sounded scared.
Not angry.
Not controlling.
Scared.
Claire looked at me.
“I was married to Jason.””
The room went completely silent.
I heard the ticking clock on the wall.
The sound of the air conditioner.
My own heartbeat.
“You were what?””
Claire looked down.
“We were married for three years.””
I turned to Jason.
The papers in his hand suddenly made sense.
The savings.
The secret.
The fear.
“You were married before me?””
Jason opened his mouth.
I didn’t let him speak.
“Did you forget to mention that?””
“Emily, listen—”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“No, I have spent months listening to everyone else.””
I pointed toward Margaret.
“Your mother telling me what a wife should do.””
Then Samantha.
“Your sister making jokes every time I asked for help.””
Then I looked back at him.
“And you telling me I should just handle my responsibilities.””
Jason looked away.
Claire whispered, “I didn’t know.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know he remarried so quickly.””
Jason snapped.
“Claire, this isn’t your business anymore.””
She looked at him.
“You’re right.””
Her voice became colder.
“It stopped being my business when you disappeared.””
That caught everyone’s attention.
I looked at Jason.
“Disappeared?””
Claire nodded.
“He left without warning.””
Jason’s face hardened.
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then tell her what happened.””
Nobody answered.
Claire reached into her bag and pulled out a small folder.
My stomach tightened.
Another folder.
Another secret.
She handed it to me.
“I came here because I found something.””
Jason stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Claire looked at him.
“Why? Afraid she’ll finally know?””
I opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
A divorce agreement.
Medical bills.
And a photograph.
A photograph of Jason standing beside Claire in a hospital room.
He was holding a baby.
My hands started shaking.
I looked at Jason.
“Who is that?””
He didn’t answer.
Claire did.
“My daughter.””
The room exploded.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Samantha whispered, “Jason…”
I stared at the picture.
A baby.
A child.
Another family.
Another life.
I felt like the walls were closing in.
“You have a daughter?””
Jason stepped toward me.
“Emily, I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
He stopped.
I laughed softly.
“When she turned eighteen?””
His silence was the answer.
Then Claire said something that made my blood run cold.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at Jason.
Then back at me.
“He didn’t just hide his daughter.””
May you like
She took a breath.
“He hid why he left us.””
