Chapter 6: The Name on the Report
Nobody understood why I was looking at Claire.
Not at first.
She looked confused.
“What?””
I couldn’t answer.
My hands were shaking too badly.
Jason noticed.
“What does the report say?””
I looked at him.
For years, I had imagined moments where I would finally confront him.
Moments where I would stand strong.
Where I would have the perfect words.
But real betrayal doesn’t happen like that.
There is no perfect speech.
No dramatic music.
Just a person standing in front of you while your entire world changes.
“I need everyone to leave.””
Margaret frowned.
“What?””
“I said leave.””
My voice was quiet.
But it carried.
Jason stared at me.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I pointed toward the door.
“Your mother. Your sister. Claire.””
Claire looked hurt.
“Emily, I didn’t do anything.””
I looked at the report again.
“I know.””
The room became still.
Then I added:
“That’s the problem.””
Everyone froze.
Jason looked at me.
“What are you saying?””
I looked at the paper.
“The baby’s DNA doesn’t match you.””
His face tightened.
“But you said—”
“I didn’t say it matches Claire.””
Claire’s expression changed.
“What?””
I took a breath.
“The report shows the biological match is connected to someone from a previous sample database.””
Nobody understood.
Except maybe Jason.
His face slowly changed.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You know something.””
“I don’t.””
“You do.””
He stepped back.
“I don’t know anything.””
But his voice was different.
Too quick.
Too defensive.
I had learned something over the last year.
People who tell the truth usually explain.
People who hide things usually fight.
Claire looked between us.
“Jason, what is she talking about?””
He ignored her.
“Emily, listen to me. This doesn’t prove anything.””
I laughed quietly.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“When the doctor called, you looked guilty before you even knew the result.””
His face hardened.
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
I repeated the word.
“You want to talk about fair?””
I pointed around the room.
“Was it fair when your family treated me like a maid?””
Nobody answered.
“Was it fair when you let them?””
Silence.
“Was it fair when you hid an entire child from me?””
Jason looked down.
That was the answer.
Then Claire stepped forward.
“I need to know what name is on that report.””
I looked at her.
“I’m not ready to say.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Emily.””
“I said I’m not ready.””
Because the name was impossible.
It was someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had been sitting in this house.
Someone who had looked me in the eyes while knowing there was a secret.
The front door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
Margaret gasped.
“Samantha?””
Samantha stood there.
She had been outside.
Listening.
Her face was pale.
“I’m sorry.””
Nobody spoke.
She looked at Jason.
Then at me.
“I heard everything.””
Jason looked angry.
“Samantha, go upstairs.””
She ignored him.
Instead, she looked at the report in my hand.
Then at my face.
“You found out.””
My heart stopped.
Jason turned toward his sister.
“What are you talking about?””
Samantha looked terrified.
“I thought you told her.””
“Told me what?”” I asked.
Samantha’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought Jason explained.””
The room went silent.
Jason’s voice dropped.
“Samantha.””
But she kept going.
“He said it was handled.””
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“What was handled?””
Samantha looked at me.
And whispered:
“The night before your wedding.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
“The night before you married Jason…”
She looked at her brother.
“…I saw who he was really with.””
My stomach twisted.
Jason stepped toward her.
“Don’t.””
But it was too late.
Samantha had already opened the door.
May you like
And behind that door was the truth that could destroy everything.
“I saw Jason with Claire’s daughter.””
