Chapter 2: The Secret in the Drawer
Margaret waved the paper in the air like she had discovered a weapon.
The entire room changed.
A few minutes earlier, they had been angry about burning clothes.
Now they were interested.
Curious.
Almost excited.
I stood near the doorway, exhausted, my hand resting protectively over my stomach.
Jason looked from his mother to me.
“What is that?””
Margaret folded the paper slowly.
“Something I found in your wife’s bedroom drawer.””
My heart sank.
Not because I was afraid of what was written.
Because I was tired of being forced to defend myself.
“Margaret,” I said, “put that down.””
She raised an eyebrow.
“Why? Is there something you don’t want us to see?””
Samantha leaned forward from the sofa.
“Oh my God. Is this why she’s been acting strange?””
I looked at her.
“Acting strange?””
Samantha shrugged.
“You’ve been distant. You’ve been emotional. You’re always tired.””
I almost laughed.
Almost.
“I’m pregnant.””
She rolled her eyes.
“Everyone knows that.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“Everyone knows I’m pregnant. Nobody knows what I’ve been carrying.””
The room became silent.
For a moment, Jason looked uncomfortable.
But then Margaret spoke.
“Don’t try to make yourself the victim, Emily.””
Those words.
That was always her favorite weapon.
Victim.
Drama.
Overreacting.
Anything except admitting she had hurt me.
Jason crossed his arms.
“Mom, what did you find?””
Margaret unfolded the paper.
“It’s a bank statement.””
I felt my chest tighten.
Samantha gasped.
“A secret account?””
Jason looked at me.
“Emily?””
I stared at him.
The fact that he immediately suspected me hurt more than I expected.
“Do you really think I would hide money from you?””
He hesitated.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
That second was enough.
Margaret smiled.
“Then explain why you have savings we didn’t know about.””
I took a slow breath.
Because this was the moment.
The moment I could tell them everything.
I could explain every dollar.
Every late night.
Every sacrifice.
But I wanted to know something first.
“Jason,” I said, “how much money do you think I have?””
He frowned.
“I don’t know. A few thousand?””
I looked at him.
“A few thousand?””
He shrugged.
“I don’t check your accounts.””
I nodded slowly.
That was almost funny.
Because he didn’t check my accounts.
He didn’t check my doctor appointments either.
He didn’t check whether I had eaten.
He didn’t check how many nights I cried quietly in the bathroom.
But suddenly, he cared about money.
Margaret placed the paper on the table.
“You have been hiding things from this family.””
I walked closer.
“Actually, I have been protecting this family.””
Jason’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
I looked at the people around me.
The people who had spent months taking from me.
My time.
My energy.
My patience.
They had no idea what I had done.
No idea what I had given up.
“I saved that money before we got married,” I said.
Margaret scoffed.
“And why keep it secret?””
“Because it was mine.””
The room went still.
Jason’s face hardened.
“We’re married, Emily.””
“Yes,” I replied.
“We are.””
“Then there shouldn’t be secrets.””
I looked at him.
“Funny. I was about to say the same thing.””
His eyebrows pulled together.
“What’s that supposed to mean?””
I walked toward the hallway.
“Come with me.””
Nobody moved.
Jason stared.
“Where?””
“To the bedroom.””
Margaret immediately stepped forward.
“Whatever you’re hiding, you can show us here.””
I turned back.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“This isn’t about money.””
Samantha laughed nervously.
“Then what is it?””
I looked at Jason.
“Something your brother should have told you a long time ago.””
Jason’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
And suddenly, I knew.
He wasn’t confused.
He was afraid.
We walked into the bedroom.
I opened the bottom drawer of my nightstand.
Inside was a small envelope.
I handed it to Jason.
He looked at the envelope.
Then at me.
“What is this?””
“Open it.””
His hands shook slightly as he pulled out the papers.
The first page was a medical document.
The second was a receipt.
The third was a letter.
Jason’s face lost color.
“What… is this?””
I watched him read.
And for the first time in months, I saw something I thought I would never see again.
Fear.
Not anger.
Not annoyance.
Fear.
“What does this mean?”” he whispered.
I looked at the man I married.
“The money you found?””
I paused.
“That was never for me.””
Jason looked up.
“Then who was it for?””
Before I could answer, there was a knock at the front door.
Margaret’s voice came from the hallway.
“Jason?””
Then another voice followed.
A woman’s voice.
A voice I had never heard before.
“Is Emily here?””
Jason froze.
May you like
Because he knew that voice.
And when he looked at me, I realized the secret I was about to reveal was not the only one hidden in this house.
