Chapter 4: The Truth He Buried
Nobody spoke after Claire’s words.
The entire house felt frozen.
Jason stood in the middle of the living room, surrounded by the consequences of every lie he had buried.
For months, I had wondered why my husband felt like a stranger.
Now I understood.
Because I had never known the whole man.
I had only known the version he wanted me to see.
Jason shook his head.
“Claire, don’t do this.””
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””
Margaret looked at her son.
“Jason, what is she talking about?””
He looked at his mother.
Then at me.
Then at the floor.
That was when I knew.
The truth was worse than anything I imagined.
“Tell me,” I said.
Jason looked at me.
“Emily…”
“Tell me.””
My voice was quiet.
But this time, nobody ignored me.
Claire sat down slowly.
“I met Jason when we were young. He was charming. Everyone loved him.””
I almost smiled.
That sounded familiar.
“He told me he wanted a family. He told me I was the only person who understood him.””
My eyes moved toward Jason.
Those were the same words he had said to me.
Claire continued.
“When our daughter was born, things changed.””
Jason looked angry.
“Stop.””
She ignored him.
“He started staying out late. He stopped helping. He said he felt trapped.””
My fingers curled.
The same pattern.
The same excuses.
“He told me he needed space.””
Claire looked at me.
“But he didn’t tell me he had already started looking for another life.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Jason.
“Were you cheating?””
His face tightened.
“That’s not simple.””
I shook my head.
“No. It is.””
I pointed at him.
“You either were or you weren’t.””
Jason looked away.
That was enough.
Margaret immediately defended him.
“Jason made mistakes.””
I turned toward her.
“Mistakes?””
She opened her mouth.
But nothing came out.
Because even she knew.
This was bigger than a mistake.
Claire reached into the folder again.
“He left me with medical bills. He stopped answering calls. He told everyone I was unstable.””
Jason’s expression changed.
“That’s not true.””
Claire laughed sadly.
“You told your own family I was difficult.””
Margaret looked uncomfortable.
I noticed.
“You knew?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
My heart sank.
“Margaret.””
She looked at me.
“I knew he had a difficult divorce.””
“Difficult?””
I repeated the word.
“You knew he had a child?””
She looked away.
That was the moment everything shattered.
Not because Jason lied.
I expected that now.
But because his family knew.
They welcomed me into this house.
They watched me carry his baby.
They watched me cook, clean, and beg for basic kindness.
And they never told me.
Jason stepped forward.
“Emily, listen to me.””
I backed away.
“No.””
He stopped.
“I need you to understand something.””
“I understand plenty.””
I pointed toward the papers.
“I understand why you didn’t want me opening that drawer.””
His face changed.
Because he knew.
The secret I had been protecting was now connected to his.
I picked up the document Claire had brought.
“You thought my savings were suspicious.””
Jason frowned.
“What does that have to do with this?””
I looked at him.
“Everything.””
I turned the paper around.
“This money was for my daughter.””
Everyone froze.
Jason stared.
“Our daughter.””
I corrected him.
“For our baby.””
I touched my stomach.
“Before you ask, no, I wasn’t planning to leave you.””
His expression softened for a second.
“I didn’t think that.””
I looked at him.
“Yes, you did.””
The silence proved it.
“I saved that money because I learned something.””
Jason swallowed.
“What?””
I looked at Claire.
Then back at him.
“I learned that love doesn’t protect you from being abandoned.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
Because she understood.
She had lived it.
Jason looked at the floor.
For the first time, he had no defense.
Then my phone rang.
Everyone looked at the sound.
I pulled it from my pocket.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Is this Emily Carter?””
“Yes.””
“This is Dr. Reynolds from the hospital.””
My heart tightened.
“Is everything okay?””
There was a pause.
A long pause.
Then he said:
“Emily, we need to discuss the DNA test you requested.””
My eyes moved slowly toward Jason.
Because I had never requested a DNA test.
And neither had he.
“DNA test?”” I whispered.
Jason’s face turned pale.
The doctor continued.
“We found something unusual in the results.””
I held the phone tighter.
“What unusual thing?””
The voice on the other end became serious.
“The baby’s biological information doesn’t match the father listed on the paperwork.””
I looked at Jason.
May you like
And for the first time that day…
He looked terrified of me.
