Chapter 7: The Daughter He Hid
Samantha’s words stayed in the air.
“I saw Jason with Claire’s daughter.””
Nobody moved.
The television was still playing in the background, but the sound felt miles away. A commercial played. Someone laughed on the screen.
Meanwhile, our entire family was falling apart in the living room.
I looked at Jason.
“Claire’s daughter?””
He didn’t answer.
That was all I needed.
My hand moved to my stomach.
The baby shifted beneath my palm.
A tiny movement.
A reminder that there was still someone innocent in the middle of all these lies.
“Samantha,” I said quietly, “tell me exactly what you saw.””
Samantha looked at Jason.
He shook his head.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
Jason’s voice became sharper.
“Samantha, don’t.””
But she stepped forward.
“For years, I believed you had a reason.””
Jason stared at her.
“A reason for what?””
“For leaving Claire.””
The room went silent.
Samantha took a deep breath.
“I was young. I was stupid. You were my brother. I believed whatever you told me.””
Margaret looked at her daughter.
“What are you saying?””
Samantha wiped her eyes.
“I’m saying Jason lied.””
Jason laughed once.
A cold, humorless laugh.
“You’re all turning against me now?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
My voice was steady.
“We’re finally seeing you.””
His face changed.
Samantha continued.
“The night before Emily’s wedding, I saw Jason at a restaurant.””
I frowned.
“My wedding?””
She nodded.
“He told me he was meeting an old friend.””
Jason looked away.
“But when I drove past the restaurant, I saw him sitting with Claire’s daughter.””
Claire stepped forward.
“My daughter?””
Samantha nodded.
“She was crying.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“Why?””
Samantha looked down.
“Because she found out Jason was getting married.””
The silence that followed was painful.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because Jason had a past.
Everyone has a past.
Because he built our future on top of a lie.
“You knew?”” I asked Jason.
He looked at me.
“Emily…”
“You knew your daughter knew about me?””
He didn’t respond.
I closed my eyes.
The answer hurt more than the words.
Claire looked devastated.
“She knew?””
Samantha nodded.
“She found out from social media. She saw the wedding announcement.””
Claire covered her mouth.
“My daughter thought she wasn’t important enough to be told.””
Jason finally exploded.
“Enough!””
Everyone looked at him.
His face was red.
“You don’t understand anything.””
I stared at him.
“Then explain.””
He looked around the room.
At his mother.
His sister.
Claire.
Me.
And for once, he couldn’t find anyone willing to defend him.
“I was trying to protect everyone.””
I almost laughed.
“Protect?””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
“No, Jason.””
I shook my head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
He looked hurt.
But I didn’t stop.
“You didn’t protect Claire.””
I pointed toward her.
“You abandoned her.””
“You didn’t protect your daughter.””
I looked at the papers.
“You erased her.””
Then I touched my stomach.
“And you didn’t protect me.””
His eyes lowered.
Because he knew I was right.
Claire stepped closer.
“Why did you really leave?””
Jason stayed quiet.
She asked again.
“Why?””
Finally, he spoke.
“I was scared.””
Nobody expected that answer.
Jason sat down slowly.
“I found out something about my health.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“When Claire and I were together, I was told I might not be able to have children.””
The room went quiet.
Claire frowned.
“What?””
Jason nodded.
“I panicked.””
He looked ashamed.
“I thought my life was over.””
I stared at him.
“So you left?””
“I thought I was saving Claire from a future where she couldn’t have the family she wanted.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“You didn’t save me.””
Her voice broke.
“You destroyed me.””
Jason looked down.
“I was wrong.””
“Yes,” she whispered.
“You were.””
I didn’t know what to feel.
Anger.
Sadness.
Disappointment.
All of it existed at once.
Then I remembered something.
The DNA test.
I looked at the paper again.
“If you thought you couldn’t have children…”
Everyone looked at me.
“Then why were you so sure this baby was yours?””
Jason froze.
Nobody answered.
Because that question had been sitting there all along.
I turned toward him.
“You never asked.””
His face went pale.
“You never questioned.””
I stepped closer.
“You acted like you knew.””
Jason looked away.
And then I saw it.
A small movement.
A moment of recognition.
He knew something.
“Jason.””
He looked at me.
“Who else knew?””
His silence was enough.
“Who else knew?””
The front door opened.
A man’s voice came from the hallway.
“Jason?””
Everyone turned.
I didn’t recognize him.
But Jason did.
And this time…
Jason looked terrified.
The man walked into the room holding a folder.
“I came as soon as I heard.””
He looked at me.
Then at my stomach.
Then at Jason.
“Emily deserves the truth.””
Jason stood.
“Don’t.””
The man ignored him.
“My name is Daniel.””
May you like
He opened the folder.
“And I’m the reason your DNA test came back the way it did.””
