Chapter 5: The Night Claire Died

I didn’t sleep.

Not after reading that final sentence.

The hospital.

Vanessa.

The night Claire died.

Three things I had never connected before.

I sat at the kitchen table as the sun came up, staring at old photographs.

Claire laughing.

Claire holding Maya.

Claire standing beside Vanessa at a birthday party.

They looked like friends.

But now I wondered how much of that was real.

Maya walked into the kitchen wearing her school uniform.

She stopped when she saw my face.

“Daddy?””

I forced a smile.

“Morning.””

“You didn’t sleep.””

It wasn’t a question.

I looked at my daughter.

Ten years old.

Too young to notice the pain adults tried to hide.

Too old to believe every lie.

“I’m okay.””

She sat across from me.

“You always say that when you’re not.””

I smiled sadly.

“You sound like your mother.””

Maya looked down.

“Was Mom scared?””

I knew what she was asking.

Not about the hospital.

About the letter.

About everything.

“Yes,” I said.

“But she wasn’t scared because of you.””

Maya looked at me.

“She was scared because she knew someone might hurt you.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Why would someone do that?””

I didn’t have an answer.

And that was the hardest part.

After dropping Maya off at school, I drove straight to Claire’s sister’s house.

Rachel opened the door before I knocked twice.

She looked at my face and immediately knew.

“You found it.””

I nodded.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because Claire asked me not to unless you discovered the truth yourself.””

“She knew Vanessa was dangerous?””

Rachel stepped aside.

“Come in.””

We sat at her dining table.

Rachel placed an old folder in front of me.

“I kept copies of everything.””

I opened it.

Inside were emails.

Messages.

Documents.

My hands shook.

“What is this?””

“Proof that Vanessa was trying to insert herself into your family long before Claire died.””

I looked through the pages.

The dates shocked me.

Vanessa had been contacting Claire for years.

Before the wedding.

Before she became my wife.

“She knew Claire was sick?””

Rachel nodded.

“She visited her.””

“Why?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Because she wanted something.””

I looked up.

“What?””

Rachel’s expression was heavy.

“You.””

The room went quiet.

I stared at her.

“No.””

“I wish I was wrong.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Rachel pushed one document toward me.

It was a message from Vanessa.

The words were simple.

Once Claire is gone, Marcus will need someone. I can be that person.

My stomach turned.

“She planned this?””

Rachel sighed.

“Claire figured it out too late.””

I stood up.

“She was trying to replace Claire?””

“She was trying to replace the entire family.””

I thought about Maya sitting alone at the breakfast table.

The empty chair.

The tears.

The way she had asked if she could be treated like my daughter.

I felt sick.

“Why didn’t Claire tell me?””

Rachel looked at me sadly.

“Because she knew you loved Vanessa.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Claire was afraid you wouldn’t believe her.””

That hurt.

Because it was true.

After Claire died, Vanessa had been there.

She brought meals.

She helped with Maya.

She became the person everyone trusted.

Including me.

I covered my face.

“I failed her.””

Rachel shook her head.

“You trusted someone who knew how to look innocent.””

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked at the screen.

It was the school.

My heart dropped.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

The voice on the other end sounded worried.

“Mr. Carter, this is Maya’s teacher. There’s a situation.””

I stood.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone came to pick Maya up.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

The teacher hesitated.

“She said she was a family member.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who was it?””

May you like

The teacher lowered her voice.

“She gave the name Vanessa.””
