Chapter 15: The Trap Beneath the Truth

I sat in my car outside the police station for almost an hour.

I couldn’t move.

The world felt unreal.

First Vanessa.

Then Daniel.

Now the school counselor.

How many people had been part of this?

How long had they been watching us?

I called Maya’s school.

The receptionist answered.

“Carter Elementary.””

“I need to speak with the counselor.””

There was a pause.

“May I ask why?””

“My daughter’s name is involved in a report.””

Another pause.

Then:

“She isn’t available today.””

I frowned.

“Where is she?””

“She resigned this morning.””

My hands tightened around the phone.

“Who accepted her resignation?””

“I don’t know.””

Of course.

Nobody knew anything.

That was how Vanessa operated.

She hid behind other people.

I went home.

Maya was sitting on the couch.

She looked at me immediately.

“Something happened.””

I sat beside her.

“Why do you say that?””

“Because you have that face.””

I smiled sadly.

“My face?””

“The face you make when you’re trying not to worry me.””

I looked at my daughter.

Ten years old.

And somehow she understood me better than most adults.

I took her hand.

“Someone is trying to hurt us.””

Her eyes widened.

“Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“Is it because of me?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Everyone keeps fighting because of me.””

I turned toward her.

“Maya.””

She looked up.

“People are making choices. Those choices are not your fault.””

She nodded.

But I knew she was still carrying the weight.

Later that evening, I searched through old files again.

This time, I wasn’t looking for letters.

I was looking for patterns.

Anything connecting Vanessa, Daniel, and the counselor.

Then I found something.

An old email.

From Claire.

Sent two weeks before she died.

I had never seen it.

The subject line:

*If anything happens to me.*

My hands shook as I opened it.

Marcus, I need you to know something.

I continued reading.

Vanessa is not trying to take my place.

I frowned.

That was what I had assumed.

Then I read the next sentence.

She is trying to prove Maya was never yours.

My heart stopped.

I kept reading.

She found someone willing to help her change the story.

Someone.

Not Daniel.

Not the counselor.

Someone from the beginning.

The final line made me stand.

Marcus, the person helping Vanessa is the same person who helped hide the truth about Maya’s birth.

I stared at the screen.

Then I heard a sound.

The front door.

Opening.

My blood turned cold.

“Maya?””

No answer.

I grabbed my phone and walked toward the hallway.

“Maya?””

A voice answered.

Not my daughter’s.

A woman’s voice.

“You finally found the email.””

I froze.

Vanessa stepped into the living room.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was another person.

Someone holding a folder.

Someone I recognized immediately.

My heart sank.

Because it was the one person I thought would never betray Claire.

The one person who had helped us uncover the truth.

Rachel.

Vanessa smiled.

“Now you can finally meet the person who knows everything.””

I stared at Rachel.

“Why?””

Rachel looked away.

And whispered:

“Because I was there when Maya was born.””

May you like

Then she opened the folder.

And pulled out a document with my name on it.
