Chapter 12: The Betrayal We Missed
I stared at the photograph until my eyes hurt.
Rachel.
Standing beside Vanessa.
Outside the hospital.
The night Maya was born.
My mind refused to accept it.
Rachel had helped me.
She gave me Claire’s letters.
She told me about Vanessa.
She warned me.
So why was she there?
I called her.
She answered after one ring.
“Marcus?””
I didn’t say hello.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were with Vanessa the night Maya was born?””
Silence.
That silence answered more than words could.
“Marcus…”
“I saw the picture.””
Another pause.
“Where did you get it?””
“That’s not the question.””
Rachel exhaled.
“I knew this day would come.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“I didn’t want you finding out like this.””
“Finding out what?””
Her voice cracked.
“I was there.””
I stood.
“Why?””
“Because Claire called me.””
“Then why did you let me believe she was alone?””
Rachel was quiet.
“Because she asked me to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She told me not to tell you.””
“Why?””
Rachel started crying.
“Because Claire was protecting you.””
That made no sense.
“From what?””
Rachel whispered:
“From the truth about Maya’s birth.””
I closed my eyes.
“Rachel, stop speaking in riddles.””
She took a breath.
“The night Maya was born, Vanessa wasn’t the only person who made a mistake.””
I felt anger rising.
“What mistake?””
Rachel answered softly:
“I was the one who found Vanessa.””
My grip tightened.
“Found her where?””
“In the hospital parking lot.””
“Doing what?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then:
“Leaving.””
I felt sick.
“Leaving Claire?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
I paced across the room.
“Rachel, you knew Vanessa abandoned my wife during labor.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I wanted to.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Rachel’s voice broke.
“Because Claire begged me.””
I stopped.
“Claire begged you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rachel was crying now.
“Because Claire knew Vanessa was dangerous.””
I sat down slowly.
“But that doesn’t explain the picture.””
“No.””
“Then explain it.””
Rachel was silent.
Finally, she said:
“Vanessa called me that night.””
My heart sank.
“She told me Claire needed help.””
“And?””
“I went there.””
“Then what happened?””
Rachel whispered:
“She gave me a choice.””
I frowned.
“What choice?””
“She said if I told anyone what I saw, she would make sure Claire lost Maya.””
My chest tightened.
“She threatened custody?””
“Yes.””
“And you believed her?””
Rachel cried harder.
“I was young. I was scared. I thought I was protecting Claire.””
I looked at the photo again.
“Why did you stay quiet for ten years?””
Rachel answered:
“Because Claire made me promise.””
“Why?””
“Because she thought Vanessa would eventually leave Maya alone.””
I laughed bitterly.
“She was wrong.””
“Yes.””
The word hung between us.
Then Rachel said something else.
Something that made me stand.
“Marcus…”
“What?””
“There’s another part of the story.””
I waited.
“Vanessa didn’t come back into Claire’s life because of you.””
“Then why?””
Rachel whispered:
“Because of Maya.””
I felt a chill.
“What about Maya?””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“Before Claire died, she discovered Vanessa had been watching Maya for years.””
I looked toward my daughter’s bedroom.
“Watching?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“Because Vanessa believed Maya belonged to her.””
I couldn’t speak.
Then Rachel said:
“She didn’t want to replace Claire.””
A pause.
“She wanted to replace you.””
At that exact moment, the lights in my house went out.
The entire room went dark.
Then my phone received one final message.
From Vanessa.
Ask your daughter what she remembers about the woman who visited her bedroom when she was five.
I looked upstairs.
May you like
Toward Maya’s room.
And for the first time, I was afraid of what my daughter might remember.
