Chapter 14: The Friend Who Betrayed Me

I arrived at Daniel’s office fifteen minutes early.

Not because I was eager to see him.

Because I needed time to think.

I sat in the parking lot, watching people walk in and out of the building.

For years, I trusted Daniel.

He handled my business.

He attended my wedding.

He brought gifts when Maya was born.

He knew my family.

And maybe that was exactly why Vanessa chose him.

She didn’t need someone powerful.

She needed someone close.

Someone nobody would question.

I walked into his office.

Daniel looked up and smiled.

“Marcus.””

I studied his face.

Looking for guilt.

Fear.

Anything.

But he looked completely normal.

“How are you?””

I sat down.

“Fine.””

He opened his folder.

“I reviewed everything.””

“Did you?””

He looked up.

“What’s that supposed to mean?””

I leaned forward.

“Who else have you reviewed this with?””

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“Nobody.””

I placed my phone on the table.

Then I played the recording.

It was from the previous night.

A security camera from my neighbor’s house.

The audio wasn’t perfect.

But it was enough.

Daniel’s voice.

Talking to Vanessa.

He still believes I’m helping him.

Daniel looked at the phone.

Then back at me.

“Marcus…”

I stood.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

“Why would you do this?””

Daniel sighed.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

“Try me.””

He closed the folder.

“You think this is about money?””

I said nothing.

“It’s not.””

“Then what?””

Daniel looked frustrated.

“It’s about balance.””

I almost laughed.

“Balance?””

“Claire had everything.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“She had you. She had a family. She had a perfect life.””

I stepped back.

“You’re talking about Claire like she was your enemy.””

Daniel looked away.

“She made people feel like they were less.””

“That’s what Vanessa told you?””

His silence answered.

I shook my head.

“You actually believe her.””

Daniel stood.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“But I know what you’re doing now.””

He looked at me.

“You’re going to lose, Marcus.””

The calmness in his voice frightened me.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa has evidence.””

“What evidence?””

He smiled sadly.

“The kind that makes judges listen.””

I left.

Immediately.

I drove home.

But halfway there, my phone rang.

The police.

I answered.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“We need you to come to the station.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

“There has been a report filed.””

“By who?””

A pause.

“Vanessa Carter.””

I gripped the steering wheel.

“What report?””

The officer hesitated.

“Allegations of emotional abuse.””

I almost couldn’t speak.

“She accused me?””

“Yes.””

The officer lowered his voice.

“And there’s another issue.””

“What?””

“She provided recordings.””

My heart sank.

“What recordings?””

The officer said:

“Conversations between you and Maya.””

I froze.

Impossible.

Because I had never recorded my daughter.

Then I understood.

Someone else had.

Someone who had been inside my home.

Someone who had been watching.

When I arrived at the station, the officer handed me the file.

Inside were printed transcripts.

My words.

Maya’s words.

Private moments.

Twisted into something ugly.

At the bottom of the last page was a signature.

The person who submitted the recordings.

I read the name.

And my hands started shaking.

Because it wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Daniel.

May you like

It was someone I never expected.

Maya’s school counselor.
